The Farmer's Almanac says that four is the perfect number of DH's to have this year.

As of right now, the only DH types the White Sox officially have is Konerko and Thome.

Everett is already gone, with no chance of returning. Thomas is gone too, with his contract already having been bought out, but there's possibly a very very small chance he will return. He'd get almost no playing time unless Konerko or Thome were to get hurt... so unless he's coming back for very cheap and likes riding the bench, it's probably not such a good idea.As of right now, the only DH types the White Sox officially have is Konerko and Thome.

then with an overpaid Konerko matching the same as a fairly paid one... and Thome doing what Everett and Thomas did... how are they any different than last season? Oh yeah they have less money and no longer have Aaron Rowand. OK. Good plan.

Now, he is a very good defensive 1b, and Thome is going to be as good as any DH in the league. So, they lost Rowand, but look at his numbers, it wasn't that much to lose. They have several young OF prospects, in Sweeney, Anderson & Bouchard who will compete to play LF/CF, and there won't be a drop off from last year's Rowand. Maybe Rowand has more potential, but a guy whose projections I respect, baseballnotebook.com, was not very high on him last year, and proved to be right.
The team is built on that pitching, and as of now, they are all healthy & coming back. So, until I see something out of Minn. or Clev., I'm seeing the '06 Sox in the playoffs again, which is making me contemplate season tickets for about $10k. I can re-coupe about half of that IF they make the playoffs easily, and ALL of it IF they went to the WS again, so it's real tempting. Of course, $10k is a large chunk of change to just throw out there on baseball tickets, and when I do goto the games, I always have to have real good seats. You spend so much on beer & food, the price of the ticket becomes a small portion of the day's spending, but factors in a lot on how much you enjoyed the game.

Konerko is making about $4 million more, and for one of the slowest men in the league, I'd say he is overpaid. However, the money doesn't mean crap when evaluating the team's overall talent. The reason Konerko got so much for so long is tied to the weak free agent market, and that in Chicago, he is the fan favorite. The White Sox are a team that rarely sells out, regardless of record, and they are trying to turn the town from a Cub town to a Sox town, or at least 50/50. They will easily make back the $4 million in attendance, jersey's, concessions, etc by signing Konerko, than the fan money they would have lost if they didn't, so overpaying him makes sense to me.Now, he is a very good defensive 1b, and Thome is going to be as good as any DH in the league. And yes, I would prefer Thome over Carl "first pitch, especially in the dirt, swinging" Everett/Thomas. He costs less for the Sox(8mil vs 14.5mil the duo would cost in 2006), will free up a roster spot (1 player vs 2), is a great clubhouse guy, and has the better chance of putting up strong numbers given the same ABs this year. Either way you are rolling the dice, but I'd prefer Thome.
It does suck that Rowand is gone, but the White Sox have 2 maybe 3 possible future star OFs waiting to get their chance at the major league level. Either Rowand had to go, or one of them.
PS- Don't be bitter because the Brewers suck :P

DougB, unfortunately there is a little thing called Free Agency in baseball and sometimes you have to payup to keep your good players... BrutusKhan, you forgot about Jerry Owens as a possible replacement for Rowand too... they've really got alot of options.

Quite the optimist. No team ever has as many as two future star outfielders "waiting to get their chance", let alone three. If you're lucky, one of them will turn into a very good major league starter and another will be servicable. Attrition always claims prospects, especially in an organization that still prefers tools over production and who have a mixed track record at best with the previous decade's worth of "can't miss" prospects.

Not all these guys were drafted by the Sox, but I would say the Sox qualify for some of the credit on their success.
Taking that into account, Borchard was a big time prospect, cost like 5 or 10 mil signing bonus to get him not to play football. He looked worse than Drew Henson, until midway last season, where he seems to have turned the corner. This guy has hit HR's over 500 ft more than once. Think Adam Dunn w/ out the walks. If he develops an eye, he'll be an instant star. If not, the more likely, he'll never bat over 100 times in a season.
Anderson & Sweeney & Owens are legit prospects, but their minor league stats don't scream star to me. I honestly would trade ALL of them for Pierre, and be done with it, or go get the fastest man I've seen run in my life, Joey Gathright from Tampa. Rumor has it several teams have inquired about him.
