The hockey thread

All the other off-brand sports have one.

The Caps are playing excellent hockey right now, and the Wizards are complete dogshit. So turning on Comcast Sports is always a crapshoot. Between AO, Backstrom and Alex Semin, the Caps are just awash in young talent. It's awesome.

My sis's BF works for the capitals, and he said Alex Semin dresses basically about as gay as you can possibly can (girls jackets and all). And also he pretends to not speak english so he doesnt have to speak to the media even though he seems to speak it fine whenever he actually wants something.

ok, that sums up all my hockey knowledge. good luck to the capitals i suppose. I'm going to a hockey game this season for the first time ever. (christmas present lol)

Yeah, Semin has a really shitty reputation. He's a good hockey player though. Other than AO, he probably has the most natural talent on the Caps, but he can be lazy. Backstrom probably has the better future. Also, I forgot about Mike Green. The Caps are probably closer than they've ever been to putting together a real run as a top-tier team over the next few seasons. Considering the shape that the Skins, Nats and Wizards are in, DC might finally rediscover the Caps (they sell out pretty well, and they have a strong home-ice advantage, but they still tend to get shafted by the DC media).

I watched a period of the Devils-Rangers game on...Friday. Or Saturday, maybe. Anyway, every time I watch hockey, I think that I could sort of get into it, but then I go a few months without watching a game, and I completely forget about it. But there are streams available for, like, every game on atdhe, so maybe I'll start watching it more often.

I'm sure I'll watch most of the game at Wrigley.

(anyway, I'm sure the Canadian(s) who actually know(s) about hockey will come and talk now, so proceed)

The Winter Classic is so awesome. Thursday's going to be the best.

Another day, another win. The Sabres deserve it for having such stupid, stupid uniforms.

Here: My favorite hockey team for a while was the Ottawa Senators. Why? Because they had, if I remember correctly, four Slovaks on their roster, including two from my buddy's hometown. Chara and Hossa were the two from Trencin.

i like watching washington play quite a lot actually. some of what ovechkin does on the ice i'm pretty sure is physically impossible. a very fast team, with a lot of skill and just enough physicality to not get pushed around. they remind me a lot of the team buffalo had a couple years ago before briere and drury left.

the outdoor games are always great. i think the game at wrigley was as close to perfect as you could get.

It wasn't snowing. i wanted it to snow. But what do I know? I am a Florida Panthers fan.

I think happy should go to fewer football games and more hockey games.

You know it's funny, I was watching highlights the other night and they showed the Panthers and I thought to myself, my God, the Florida Panthers still exist, I'd completely forgotten about them. (Sorry, it's easy, but actually 100% true)

yeah, so washington's team is good or something? i guess that will make it more fun.

and craig, you know better than to expect the low quality of the wizards and redskins to actually keep them out of the news. the wizards have sucked for a long time. Sadly this is one of our better teams. Redskins have been pretty terrible ever since the Norv Turner debacle, and it doesnt seem to affect the redskins popularity whatsoever.

the snow looks great on tv, but the problem is it also makes the game harder to play. the more smow you get, the slower the game becomes as neither players nor puck can move as quickly. that's actually why they play 3 periods with a flood between each rather than the two halves that fox kept agitating for.

(thank god hockey in the states is no longer on fox. that glowing puck was a mfcs disaster.)

if you're going to a washington game, you could do a lot worse than just watching the guy wearing number 8 all night.

When does Yankee Stadium go down. They should get the Winter classic there next year if its still standing. It's hosted everything else.

That's a good idea.

Heh, I hear "Florida still has a team?" all the time. They scored six on the Penguins the other day, and Crosby had 19 PIM.

I agree that snow is more aesthetically pleasing but damages the actual game. I guess it depends on whether the goal is quality of play or ratings. I don't need to watch hockey if I want to see a Chicago sports team blow a lead at Wrigley Field :)

If they do a Winter Classic in New York (and I think this is a distinct possibility next year) it'll be at New Yankee.

i think the idea is to stage an event that portrays hockey in the best possible light, so i think you want to put out the best product possible.

yankee stadium is a great idea. i'd suggest rangers/islanders if the islanders weren't awful. maybe the bruins or devils, i guess they're the next two logical rivalry games for the rangers. i've also heard phi/pit at penn state's stadium, min/dal in minny and det/col in denver. i imagine that det, mon and tor would all love to host one too.

I suspect you're right but it would be a nice send off for Old Yankee

Caps/Rangers, New Yankee Stadium. National exposure for AO and the go-go Caps. Book it.

speaking of the caps, who the heck is playing goal there these days? i don't think i see the same guy two nights in a row in the highlights.

Jose Theodore mostly, since Brent Johnson's been injured. They also stuck Simeon Varlamov in there for a game or two, who was their 1st round pick a couple of years ago, but I think he's been sent back down. Obviously, this is the big weakness.

Maple Leafs fan, I assume? (if so, I'm sorry)

You know who has two thumbs and doesn't give a censored about hockey?

Greg Ostertag. Just look at that mocking little smirk. He's amused with you. Bemused, even.

i think his left side is amused and his right side is bemused, actually. he's a complicated fellow.
