Personally I agree 100% with this, In the high school level no team should ever be down 57-0 at half. Where is your integrity in coaching this?

I was once on an extremely good basketball team in one of my youth association leagues. In the league, no team other than us had scored over 60 (we did it 4 times in 11 games i think). We had a game cancelled in the middle of the 3rd quarter in order to avoid a riot. We were winning by something like 72-8. Our gameplan was to get their two best players into foul trouble, and we fouled them both out halfway thru the first quarter. The parents of the players on the other team were yelling at the ref and telling him he sucked and yelling at us and telling us we sucked (which we all found extremely amusing). Eventually it got out of hand, and the ref just declared us the winners and went home. Im kinda surprised something similar didnt happen here.

My understanding is that he played the press until there were 4 minutes left in the game and his team reached 100. I haven't seen the game play but come on. Clearly this was well over the line. I don't expect happy to understand what sportsmanship is of course but this coach clearly deserved to be fired here.

Clearly the winning coach was a complete prick. The team they were up against was a school for "learning disabled" kids that had a total of 20 girls enrolled school wide. There is absolutely no reason for a 'real' high school to go out of their way to embarass another group of kids this way.My understanding is that he played the press until there were 4 minutes left in the game and his team reached 100. He got fired because the school apologized and then he said, well, we have nothing to apologize for. And yes, the full-court press thing and the fact that they were still shooting 3's in the 4th quarter changes this thing from a plain-old ass-kicking to something much more malicious. It's like in college football when you're beating some 1-AA team by 40 points in the 4th quarter. You put in your scrubs, you run the ball, and if they still can't stop you, tough censored . But if you're launching passes and kicking field goals, then you're just a dick.

and also, that team that we beat was the 2nd best team, it was supposed to be a close game. we didnt even win the championship (that team actually won the whole thing). Their good players didnt know how to take charges, so they took block fouls when we intentionally charged them. I would guess their coach taught them how to do that after that game was over. Lol learning.

Actually bart, I never gave my opinion. yes, he should be fired, but who cares? its women's basketball. If it was the pros, it shouldnt have been a big deal, but its high school women's basketball, and it wasnt even a rival team, it was some team that sucks.and also, that team that we beat was the 2nd best team, it was supposed to be a close game. we didnt even win the championship (that team actually won the whole thing). Some people were getting mad at the patriots for blowing people out last season. I pretended like it made me mad because i hate the patriots and like the opportunity to rip on them, but honestly, its the NFL, you shouldnt be worried about the other team's emotions.

While I agree that the Covenant team should have let up, I think it made little sense for school officials to consider forfeiting this game, and even less sense to fire the coach. Especially considering that the game was played back on January 13th, yet Covenant officials didn't react until this made national headlines, late last week.

The Dallas Academy boys basketball team recently defeated the Covenant boys basketball team and is competitive vs. other teams. The Dallas Academy boys football team is competitve as well. I believe both teams have winning percentages around .500.The Dallas Academy girls basketball team, however, is totally non-competitive, at least during this current season. I totally disagree with you here Daren. As a coach, when you go in to a game against a non-competitive team you don't usually sent out with a goal of trying to embarass the other kids. Keeping the press on, the starters in the game etc until your team reaches 100 is all about self aggrandizement over an overmatched opponent and is something that should absolutely get the coach fired.

On the news this morning, there was a discussion about a prominent local high school girls' basketball coach who noted that her team had recently won games by scores like 107 - 28 and 88 - 16. Lopsided high school scores happen with far greater frequency than we hear about, and I don't agree that it should cost a person their livelihood. If it is really a big deal, then create a "mercy" rule ending the game when the score differential reaches 50 points or something. But don't take away a person's job over something like this.

Again, he got fired not because of the score itself, but because he publicly disagreed with the school's apology. Even if you consider the game itself a simple "lapse in judgment", being a dick about refusing to apologize for running up the score is a willful act.

I think not apologizing is fine. If he wasnt sorry, then lying and apologizing isnt very "christian" of him (which is like...the school religion or something). He just shouldnt have gone public with his lack of apology, he should have just declined to comment.i think thatrogue makes a good point. Firing someone is kind of a big deal. eh.

The school is of one mind on this issue, and the coach is of another. I'm sure this won't be the last time their basketball team plays an outmatched opponent, and if they can't trust the coach to do what they feel is in the school and the girls' best interest in the future, then what choice do they have?

well its clear, it comes down to whether or not the employer wants the employee. should he lose his job? if the employer doesnt want his job, yes. I think the concern is that the school did it because they wanted to look better to the media, not because they actually had a problem with him.

Also, when they say "fired", they say he was fired as the basketball coach. But usually high school coaches are teachers too, so it's possible that the school is keeping him on in that capacity, but just taking away his coaching job.

Sometimes those things go hand-in-hand. This is a private school, you think they can afford this kind of publicity? That's why they apologized, and why they fired the coach for going behind their backs.Also, when they say "fired", they say he was fired as the basketball coach.
