Ed Delahanty's Death

I found this funny - did you know that his career ended when he died, trying to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel?

Yeah, that's not the story. He was riding a train and was kicked off for drunk and disorderly conduct on the Canadian side of the suspension bridge across the Niagara River. He was seen walking across the bridge and he either fell (or jumped, as some would have it) into the river.

Yeah, I've heard it the same way that Craig tells it. Not a funny kind of ending - more tragic.

Rube Waddell... wow, that's one gem of a story.

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of that stuff is exaggerated, although it seems pretty clear that Waddell at least had some form of undiagnosed autism (or some related disorder).

no kidding...

Here's the windup and... oh no! not only does the umpire call a balk on Waddell, but now it appears as if Waddell has left the playing field chasing after the #7 bus!

rube was mentally retarded

Rube was a common nickname for "dumb" players, as was Dummy.

No PC police back then, methinks.

here's a better history of Ed D., from our league forum:

Dummy was what they called deaf players.

(They called people "Dummy", and it's not something we shy away from, but we don't use the phrase "deaf and dumb" anymore.)
