Not really a bad deal either way, Cabrera's not a world beater but he's only 25 and has upside and Dunn can be useful.

Bottom line was Atlanta had 6 SPs and one had to go, Vasquez is in the last year of his deal so he may end up being an expensive rental.

The big question to me is: What's next in New York ?

I seriously doubt that the Yankees will give Brett Gardner the job without another option and it looks like Damon is not an option.

Even the Yankees don't have that much money, sadly. I can see Cashman going after a Marlon Byrd type or even taking a chance with Baldelli.

A Baldelli/Gardner thing in LF with Gardner playing CF when Granderson needs a day off makes sense and would be cost effective, or New York might just re-sign Nady and move him to LF, but he'd have to take a big pay cut and Boras is his agent so that's probably a no go.

The other thing this does is take the threat of the Yankees out of the Holliday/Bay negotiations and might drive their prices down a bit.

Why would this move take them out of the Bay/Holliday negotiations?

Cashman has been pretty adamant that after adding Granderson and Vasquez' salaries he's not going to make another big money move, even the Yankees have limits and their 2010 payroll is already north of $200 million.

To quote from the Vasquez press conference, (Cashman) said: ""We'll continue to look at any remaining pieces, but it's not going to be a big piece."

You think Holliday or Bay would be a "big" piece in the Yankees lineup?

They have spent north of $200 million before so I don't really see that as a reason for them to not add a player they could use.

OF at this point looks to be kind of a hole for them.

i think they qualify as 'big pieces' for anyone. that doesn't mean cashman isn't blowing smoke though.

I would think that Holliday might be out of their price range. Bay is a possibility, especially if they give him the years that he is looking for.

The difference is this year they are already over $200 million in December with probably only 16-18 players signed so even the spare parts are going to take them to $210 or so without a "big piece".

The highest the Yankees payroll has ever been is just over $209 million.

I can see them adding a $3-5 million outfielder but Holliday and Bay are both going to be $15 million plus so I just don't see it happening.

They're not at 200 million quite yet, but they have said multiple times that they want to cut their payroll from last year. Last year was $201 million, I think, so that's not looking very likely anymore, but I'd say going after Bay or Holliday would be highly unlikely.

Their contractual obligations for their 12 signed players from last season are $166,307,000, source here

The 12 players under contract are: ARod, Sabathia, Jeter, Teixeira, Burnett, Rivera, Posada, Cano, Swisher, Marte, Brackman and Juan Miranda.

Add in Vasquez, Pettite, Johnson and Granderson for $34 million and they are at $200+ million with 16 players under contract.
