Lincecum's Deal

February 13, 2010 at 07:00PM View BBCode

So the blogospheres and twitterworlds are all abuzz about how Tim Lincecum got robbed for accepting a two year $23 million deal from the Giants.

The rationale is that Lincecum obviously would've won his arbitration hearing for $13 million and then racked up a 3rd Cy Young type season and been good for $16-$20 million in 2011 so his agents left $6-$10 million on the table .

Seems perfectly logical to me, I mean young pitchers with perfect mechanics never get hurt .

some athletes still just wanna play ball.

bags and biggio signed for less than market value cause they loved Houston.

Yeah, if he stays healthy and puts up numbers over these two years, hopefully the Giants can lock him up long term

maybe he would have won, maybe he wouldn't have. but this way he gets an amount pretty close to what he was asking for, reduces his earnings risk in case of an injury somewhat, protects his free agent years and preserves an aimicable relationship with his team and their fans. as deals that avoid arbitration inevitably invovle a dollar figure in the mid-point of the two submissions, i don't really see where he's made a poor decision.

It should be pointed out that Lincecum's frame and wind up would seem to lend themselves to injury. There's no debate that when he's on he's great though.

the guy is 26 and has won back to back Cy Youngs, that makes me think 2 years 23 million is an incredible steal no matter what the injury potential is.

I think it's a good deal for both sides.

I just love the fact that the Giants had $8 million, Lincecum asked for 13, both teams got their way.

wow, earthshattering.

this article says not every great young pitcher will have a long and successful career.

this is insight you can only get from the "worldwide leader".
