What is wrong with the Habs?

Why would they trade Halak to St. Louis for a solid guy and a bucket of pucks? Carl, clue this dopey Californian in on why this trade makes sense.

1) The salary cap

That's 2, 3 and 4 too. Halak is going to be due a raise soon.

5) Carey Price was, once upon a time, a big-time prospect. He's not so old that he can't still become a really good goaltender.

6) Halak is going to live on the 2010 postseason for a while, but ultimately he wasn't that great. Look at the hockey thread - he alternated spectacular games with games where Tyler bitched about how much he sucks.

Both he and Price are arbitration eligible. They are only two years apart in age.

You don't think they kept Price for the sole reason that he's Canadian?

Price won't be able to demand as much despite being the more highly-touted prospect. I'd like to believe that perhaps the Montreal front office realized that Halak is going to be overpriced because of his playoff performance, a performance that isn't indicative of his usual level of quality. I know this deal isn't that popular but it really is very defensible without having to resort to xenophobia conspiracy theories.

Montreal had two young goalies, both of whom are restricted free agents, and they chose to keep Carey Price and trade Halak. Signing both probably wouldn't have been financially possible and playing both probably wouldn't have kept either one happy.

There are a number of reasons to choose Price, he's younger, he's bigger (which is important for NHL goalies), he's likely going to be cheaper on this next contract and many observers consider him better than Halak (Price started the All Star game in 2009) .

Also Montreal didn't get "a solid guy and a bucket of pucks". Eller was taken 13th overall in his draft year and was an AHL All Star last season he'll play in the NHL this year and should develop into a top 6 forward and is signed through 2012 with a maximum cap hit of $1.3 million. Schultz is considered a solid two way prospect who should play by 2012-13 as a 3rd line player, again with a controlled salary.

Given Halak's status as an RFA I think Montreal did alright in this deal. Of course if Eller and Schultz are stiffs, Price continues to struggle and Halak turns into a perennial All Star it'll be bad but all trades come with risks.

(Halak is a major reason Slovakia lost the bronze medal game to Finland in Vancouver this year. Nothing would make me happier than to see him develop into a perennial all-star. But seriously, fuckhim until he does. For Slovakia.)

Here in Montreal, most of the fans are prety angry about Halak trade, people have fall in love with Halak and do not understang why we did not get more after Halak performance in playoff

Tworoosters and FuriousGiorge have the right opinion about why the Canadiens made that trade. Both are RFA , Halak will probably have near 3 mil$ next season and Price should have only the 10% increase salary that team must give because of NHL rules. We have to keep money for a lot of forwards, only Gomez,Cammalleri, Gionta, Kostytsyn and Moen have contract for nesxt season... Our defense are already all sign up,Markov,Harmlik,Spacek,Gorges,Gill, Suban and Obyrne have all contract.

It was the best time for trade Halak but I think Montreal should have get TJ Oshie or Perron or Backes for him. I guess that the fact that a lot of nobody goalers perform well like Leighton,Niemi,Anderson, Howard, Rask,Rinne and Quick in the playoff, Goalers seem to be easy to find or develop in the NHL, I think the market is not good for goalers
