Is that "you" plural? Or is the animosity morely directed at one of us in particular?June 22, 2010 at 10:21AM View BBCode
[url=http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=4298&position=C]His walk rate[/url] is about half of what is was in the minors, suggesting he's still trying to adjust to big-leauge arms. On the other hand, his BABIP is much lower than in the minors.June 22, 2010 at 12:28PM View BBCode
You gotta understand, the reason why the walky guys do so well is that they go deep into counts, what people forget is they dont just sit out on the balls, they sit out on the bad strikes, because you dont walk on 4 straight pitches, you will probably take at least one strike. These guys are waiting for good pitches to hit, and becaus they dont just swing away at anything that looks like itll hit the corner, when they DO hit the ball, they hit it solid. Of course sometimes you get down 2 strikes and then you gotta go back to defending the plate, and at least fouling off those bad ones.June 22, 2010 at 12:29PM View BBCode
god, the orioles are a disaster. 19 and 50 is really happening right now.June 22, 2010 at 12:33PM View BBCode

If it is a keeper league, I wouldn't even care about it, because he will be one of the better catchers for a long time, only perhaps not this season. If it is a single season league ... what are your waiver options?June 22, 2010 at 07:56PM View BBCode
oh, as a waiver its a good pickup.June 23, 2010 at 05:59AM View BBCode
Matt Wieters' primary source of misfortune, obviously, is that he is not Joe Mauer.because you dont walk on 4 straight pitches, you will probably take at least one strike.

I said "take" as in "intentionally dont swing at a ball that you expect to be a strike", not as in "you get one"June 23, 2010 at 04:31PM View BBCode
I generously interpreted it to mean that sometimes you foul off a pitch before walking, thus preventing it from occurring on four pitches.June 23, 2010 at 04:57PM View BBCode
the point is players like vlad who swing at anything reasonable are much more likely to ground out or what have you on that first strike. You take the strike, you go deeper in the count and have a greater potential for a walk. Like, Ichiro doesnt swing at balls so much, but he doesnt walk becuase he swings at most any strike.June 23, 2010 at 05:48PM View BBCode
yeah, i don't have the stats in front of me, but you're exponentially more likely to make an out after taking the first pitch for a strike than you are to earn a walk. at 0-1 the advantage to the pitcher is larger than you seem to think.June 23, 2010 at 05:51PM View BBCode
we can't know if weiters wishes he had swung at the straight ones after they make him chase breaking balls in the dirt when they get two strikes on him. we can only assume the other players congratulate him for working the count.June 23, 2010 at 05:55PM View BBCode

in the land of the almighty obp, nothing but walks will do. hitting your way on is the easy way out.June 23, 2010 at 06:04PM View BBCode
we used to have a japanese exchange student on our team for a while. he insisted at swinging 3-0 if the pitch was a strike, becuase "first strike most important". since i've never seen anyone who better exemplified the term 'ping hitter' (in his 2+ year 'career' he had a total of zero extra-base hits), it got pretty irritating pretty quickly.June 23, 2010 at 06:06PM View BBCode
taking a walk in softball is the most sissyfied thing that ever happened.June 23, 2010 at 06:09PM View BBCode
you're right, of course, but who said anything about softball?June 23, 2010 at 06:11PM View BBCode
oh sorry. taking a walk in adult baseball (which is quite awesome, i play) is slightly less gay, for sure. slightly.Pages: 1 2
