I have him on every fantasy team I own, including the real one where actual cash changes hands, and he's killing me everywhere .
I don't get to watch much East Coast baseball so I have no idea if he's just unlucky, whether he is truly over matched, has fallen into bad habits or is just sucking because he thinks it's what you are supposed to do when you play in Baltimore .
Any thoughts ??

I still believe in Matt Wieters, but his adjustment period to the big leagues is taking longer than what most people predicted.

When you are this type of hitter, adjusting to the majors is much harder, because you get fooled by a lot more pitches, and youa re used to being able to wait for a much BETTER pitch to hit, you gotta start getting used to swinging at those more marginal/hittable pitches because you dont get as many good options.
But yeah, probably the coaches over there may just be like "JUST SWING AT ALL OF IT", becuase I mean, Jones's walk % has gone from 6.9% to 2.8% in one year. And walk% is supposed to be one of the most consistant indicators in the game.
Also, Wieters started pretty bad last year and picked it up by the end of the season, i certainly wouldnt dump him just yet. But I wouldnt have gotten him in the first place considering his somewhat unsustainable .356 BABIP last year.

You gotta understand, the reason why the walky guys do so well is that they go deep into counts, what people forget is they dont just sit out on the balls, they sit out on the bad strikes, because you dont walk on 4 straight pitches, you will probably take at least one strike. These guys are waiting for good pitches to hit, and becaus they dont just swing away at anything that looks like itll hit the corner, when they DO hit the ball, they hit it solid. In an AL only league that requires two catchers Wieters looked awfully good in March.
My issue is that I have Napoli and now Santana but at this point Wieters is virtually untradeable and there is no "bench" in the league for active players, all 23 players count .

If it is a keeper league, I wouldn't even care about it, because he will be one of the better catchers for a long time, only perhaps not this season. If it is a single season league ... what are your waiver options?

id hold onto him until close to the waiver deadline, he could pull out some decent stats by the end, and it isnt like there are a bunch of other catchers that are playing great.

I said "take" as in "intentionally dont swing at a ball that you expect to be a strike", not as in "you get one"

I have Wieters in a league or two as well. I replaced him with AJ Pierzynski in one, still have him in the other. In a mixed league you can do that. In an AL-only league, you just have to tough it out, I suppose.

the point is players like vlad who swing at anything reasonable are much more likely to ground out or what have you on that first strike. You take the strike, you go deeper in the count and have a greater potential for a walk. Like, Ichiro doesnt swing at balls so much, but he doesnt walk becuase he swings at most any strike.

yeah, i don't have the stats in front of me, but you're exponentially more likely to make an out after taking the first pitch for a strike than you are to earn a walk. at 0-1 the advantage to the pitcher is larger than you seem to think.

we can't know if weiters wishes he had swung at the straight ones after they make him chase breaking balls in the dirt when they get two strikes on him. we can only assume the other players congratulate him for working the count.

I don't see how this can be true. Ichiro is hard to walk because he swings at everything. Is there a stat that can prove this? Admittedly, my evidence is anecdotal, but I get 18 Mariners/A's games on my set every season. I've seen hundreds of Ichiro ABs over his U.S. career.

in the land of the almighty obp, nothing but walks will do. hitting your way on is the easy way out.(hitters like vlad are successful because they love to hit the fastball. they specialize in not letting the pitcher get to the breaking ball. ichrio is just plain a great hitter, and seems to enjoy hitting. not walking.)

we used to have a japanese exchange student on our team for a while. he insisted at swinging 3-0 if the pitch was a strike, becuase "first strike most important". since i've never seen anyone who better exemplified the term 'ping hitter' (in his 2+ year 'career' he had a total of zero extra-base hits), it got pretty irritating pretty quickly.(maybe happy has seen him play too, is what i'm saying)
