Change All-star team Configuration
April 16, 2011 at 03:09PM View BBCode
I would like to see a 6th starting pitcher added to the all-star team while at the same time reducing the amount of relievers to 4.
Most seasons there are a few or even a handful of SP's that are much more worthy of the all-star team than the 4th or 5th reliever that make the team. I'd rather see the starter with the 18-12 record and a 3.15 ERA/1.17 WHIP make the team over the reliever with 28 saves and an ERA over 4.50, not to mention 8 or 9 blown saves.
Assuming (and I could be wrong) this is an easy thing to change, I would really like to see this implemented!

Thanks cdunn! I voted for it. 7-3 is better than a 5-5 one.

yes, this certainly needs to happen, think about the way it breaks down, every team uses 5 starters, but every team only uses 1-2 relievers enough to be considered for the all star team, so what you end up with is
2/8 players at other positions make the team 25 pct (except OF which is 5/24 21 pct)
5/40 starting pitchers make the team 12.5 pct
5/8-16 relievers, 31-62 pct.
Way too many relievers, worthy starters get left off all the time, and relievers who aren't very good end up in the Hall of Fame.

not in any of my leagues.
honestly, this is a who cares suggestion for me. if it's not difficult i don't see the harm, as obviously there are some who feel strongly about it. but if it is a major undertaking for some reason, i wouldn't want to see tyson waste time on it.

vacuum man, bully for you that it doesn't happen in any of your leagues. but i have to think a guy like this
http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=3403487
made it in pretty much because he's a 10-time all star. This league has 15 pitchers in the Hall of Fame, and 8 of them are closers.
i have a very limited knowledge of coding, but that limited knowledge tells me this wouldn't be difficult to implement. anyway it's not gonna happen since it doesn't have a high score on idea scale.
by the way, did you really have a team called Fyling Circus, or is that a typo

typo.
(i'd guess it was the 444 saves, myself. or that league is really easy to win in. or both.)

(honestly, if that guy's getting into the hof, changing the all-star roster is the least of your voting worries.)

Of course that reliever doesn't belong in the HoF, but infortunately there are a number of owners who IMO give too much importance to all-star appearances.

I must agree that the issue here is with the voters in that league .
Everyone knows, or should know at least, that the All Stars are purely driven by "counting stats" so if the voters in that league can't see past the gray stars and look at the awful ERA, WHIP and K/BB ratio then that's their fault .

Just out of curiosity - and maybe this should be in a different thread - what would you consider minimum All Star qualifications to be, tworoosters?
I mention this only because I'm the lead owner on establishing a brand new HOF in the Harold Baines League and I'm truly interested in understanding more fully solid selection criteria.

I rhink we have gotten off topic here.
This is not about Hall of Fame.
It is about who should be the years All Stars.

I'm guessing you meant minimum Hall of Fame, not All Star, qualifications.
I'm not sure that can be quantified as every league is different but the reliever in question is only 8th in league saves, and it's a young league, and that's his only grounds for admission with an ERA barely south of 4 and a WHIP of 1.45. He doesn't qualify for career standing in ERA but if he did he'd be 60th and his WHIP would be outside the top 100.
I tend to look at rate stats when making my own decisions because in standard injury leagues players with red letter health simply rack up counting stats that are not realistic to me, although if the guy is the All time leader in hits for example but isn't top 20 in OBP I'm not likely to hold it against him.
I also use the Bill James adage of
was he ever, for an extended period of time, considered to be the best in the league at his position ?
I administer the HOF for two of my leagues, in each league we require some minimum standards be met before a player goes on the ballot but after that it's up to the voters.
The minimum standards to be included on the ballot are:
Pitchers
Must have either reached 200 wins, 300 saves or won a Cy Young or Fireman Award or appeared in 5 All Star Games
Hitters
Must have at least one of: 2,000 hits, 300 homers, 1,200 RBI, 350 SB or a career OPS above .825 or have won an MVP or appeared in 5 All Star games.

Sorry, everybody. Should have used U2U or started a new thread. Won't happen again.

I vote for the change though as well. Another starter seems like a no brainer..
Now back to the OT discussion......

No doubt, I never give a vote for those types of pitchers when it comes time for the HOF voting and there are alot of them in every league. We had a guy in the DPL not get in with 13 AS games and 5 Fireman awards due to his 4.2 ERA and 1.5 whip.

i meant that I think a lot of people vote for bad relievers to get in the HOF partly because they have a boatload of all star appearances...i dont understand the "blame the voters" argument...am i supposed to get everyone kicked out the league/off the site? Kill the voters, or do something to help them make better decisions, such as this suggestion?
I dont think the HOF thing is off-topic, it's a valid reason this suggestion should happen.

i didn't really see it as off-topic, either. as i said though, i don't think it helps your problem any. i don't think it was the all-star appearances they were voting for.

just had a starter go 21-6, 2.87 ERA with 203 strikeouts and a no-hitter fail to make the team, while a reliever with a 3.49 ERA and 7 blown saves made it, and another reliever who pitched all of 47 innings made the team.
Change we can believe in, yes we can, let's do this
