Rumours are swirling today that Philadelphia have signed Papelbon to a four year
$50 million contract.
That's just insane.

i'm trying to decide if that's dumber than the 4 year 44 million one they apparently almost signed madson to the other day. the dollars are higher but papelbon does have the better track record.
aw to hell with it. trying to seperate out that level of insanity will land you in a rubber room yourself

Apparently the Madson deal had a fifth "vested year" at $13 million as well as the guaranteed 4 years $44 million.
Papelbon's numbers have always been great and Madson's been excellent the past five years but only had to close in one of those years.
My general feeling is that if you are giving more than $7 or $8 million a year to a closer not named Mariano Rivera then it's a bad deal, and anything more than three years is crazy.

that is what they need, another pitcher. i mean, obviously. they lost the last game one nothing. if they had another pitcher, they obviously would have won zero zero.

Here are Papelbon's rankings over the past three seasons among all relievers with at least 150 innings:
19th in batting average
16th in on-base percentage
18th in slugging percentage
23rd in ERA
