Prince Fielder

January 24, 2012 at 08:26PM View BBCode

According to Yahoo:

"Breaking News
Tigers get Fielder

Detroit and Prince Fielder have agreed in principle on a nine-year, $214 million deal, sources tell Y! Sports' Tim Brown"

Over a fifth of a billion dollars tied up in a 280 lb guy. I wonder if Mike Ilitch wrote in a free Little Caesar's Pizza clause into the big fellah's contract?

So what does the lineup look like now? For this season, at least, I see either Fielder or Cabrera at DH, and the other at 1B. Which one goes where?

Next season is a little more confusing. You have Victor Martinez, Miguel Cabrera, and Prince Fielder. What I see happening, is Cabrera at 3B, Martinez at DH, and Fielder at 1B.

I'd doubt that Cabrera can play 3B any longer. More likely is a move to LF for him.

I forget if it was Dombrowski or Leyland that said Cabrera will "absolutely not" play LF.

Either way, I'm not wholly surprised. With the salary cap implemented, Ilytch can't dump all his money into the Red Wings' payroll, and after the Rays stole Carlos Pena from under the Tigers' noses, he made an impulse move to put the team back over the top.

Odds are Cabrera plays about 100 games at third with atrocious defense, splitting time at DH with Prince. The signing also gives a clear-cut ETA on top prospect Nick Castellanos, for opening day 2015.

As A lifelong Tigers fan I'm still not sure how I feel about this. One part giddy and another cautious. Fielder's signing definately cements 2 possibly 3 things. The Tigers will be one of the slowest teams in MLB and defensively you have to wonder where their going to play Cabby. Most certainly they will not be a fun lineup to face for any MLB pitching staff. I'm allready hearing people say they will be the "Midwest version of Murders row" As for those that are critical of the amout of money paid to Fielder theres one big thing your missing. Yes he may be 280 and slow and blablabla..This is an investment and Im sure at the end of his contract. The Tigers and the city will have earned back in revenue twice the amount they paid for him. Comerica Park and pretty much every Stadium they visit from now on will pretty much be packed if not sold out. Similar to how the RedWings are to the NHL. This is a huge boost to the downtown ecomomy as people will be comming in droves spendig lots of money in and around Detroit and Comerica Park.

I wouldn't want Fielder on my team unless he was getting paid a reasonable salary and only signed for 3 years. I imagine his body is going to break down soon, just like his dad's did.
