Change the bunting system
January 28, 2013 at 01:55AM View BBCode
Under the current system " A player must have a combined Speed and Bunt rating of at least A- for him to even attempt a bunt for a hit. ", which would be fine
if a player was able to improve his bunting rating.
I currently have a [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/roster.jsp?hand=r&teamid=13309]roster in the OCL majors[/url] where every starter is red lettered for speed yet none are better than C in bunting, and thus not one of them can ever bunt for a base hit.
Since bunting is actually something that can be taught, and improved with practice, it makes no sense to me that players cannot improve in this area. On the other hand nobody wants to pick up "bunting improves" at the expense of more important skills, so I propose an option whereby owners can choose to have speed improves go to either speed or bunting. That way the 23 year old player with A+ speed can have a chance to improve on his bunting technique in order to make him a more valuable asset.
It could be a check box on the minor league screen, something like "speed improves go to bunting" put it beside the positional change box.

Good idea, however I would not want this a universal option. It would be better to set this to individual players.

Yes that was the idea, each player would have a box, just as they do for positional changes, that has a drop down of either bunt or speed.

Great idea! I would also like to see the option added to allow my #2 hitter or any other designated hitter bunt a runner over. Right now, only a pitcher sac bunts a runner to 2nd or 3rd.

Earl Weaver, RIP, just turned over in his newly-dug grave.
But it's a fine idea for those who like to give away outs.

for guys that can bunt for hits, do they ever make outs on such plays? I know that we never see "joe baloney attempts to bunt for a single but is thrown out", so if it does happen it's treated verbally as a standard grounder.

(earl used to say, if you can't hit? just strike out. frank and boog and brooks will take care of it.)

(for pitchers, throw strikes, work fast, shut up. palmer could do two out of three.)

Two walks and a three run homer.
Earl was the original "new stats" guy but nobody knew it, he loved OBP and power .

My idea in Ideascale has 30 points:
a managerial section for bunting...
"Attempt a sac bunt in inning ________ with _______ outs when I am the home/away team and runners are on _________, and I lead by no more than _______ and I am behind by no more than ______, and unless the batter's bunt rating is ______ or lower."

That's great but it has no bearing on my idea expressed here, which is that the bunting skill should be able to be improved upon .
