Strange recovery

01:54. 27 27 SJ 4/19 NO 37

4th and 19 for the Gnats, they huddle and line up in a Field Goal/PAT; the Bontemps Roulez line up in a Field Goal/PAT Block.
John Matuza prepares to attempt a field goal for San Jose, Russell Wilder holding.
Kick is with the wind; Wilder's hold is good.
The 54-yard field goal attempt by John Matuza is blocked by Clarence White.
John Laing recovers the ball for the Bontemps Roulez at the NO 37

So San Jose attempts a FG from the New Orleans 44, it gets blocked and somehow gets recovered seven yards ahead of where it was blocked.

Seems a bit odd to me, wouldn't a blocked field goal attempt generally be recovered behind the line of scrimmage, in fact wouldn't it generally be recovered behind where it was attempted?

It could be recovered anywhere if Leon Lett was on their team...

Usually, yes. But sometimes they get partially blocked, deflected, knocked around. Most of the time they are recovered within a yard or two of the kicking spot.
