As a Sox fan I'm not sure how I feel about this. Although we did get a good young solid SS and there was no way Nomar was goping to re-sign with the Sox

Isnt Cabrera a free agent at the end of the season? I believe he is although is more likely to re-sign with the Red Sox than Nomar. Mientkiewietz probably takes away alot of Millar's playing time and now Ortiz will be the full time DH. The Sox got rid of a player that didnt want to play for them so I guess it helps them out in that respect.

Cabrera has sucked this year, though he had good years in 2001 and 2003, he's never been as good a hitter as Nomah. He is better defensively, which should help Derek Lowe. They also get an everyday first baseman who doesnt suck at defense (like David Ortiz) but who is only a mediocre hitter.
Nomah goes to a team with an equal realistic chance of winning a World Series (zero)
Expos dump a guy that wasn't going to resign and get something back
Twins dump a guy they didnt need (they have a lot of good 1B/corner OF in their system.

The Twins made room for Justin Moreau to play 1st, and got some prospects.

I think his stats beg to differ.

The Cubs lack a good left handed hitter - not good if you have to face St. Louis (top 4 starters RH) in the playoffs.

I'm a huge Sox fan and I'm sad to see Nomar go but he wasn't going to re-sign, he was unhappy, they were playing better before he came back anyway, and the team simply can't field. They make errors and make tons of plays that don't show up in the box scores as errors (failed scoops at 1B, they don't turn two, etc.). Also, I'm not sad to see Nomar's first-pitch-swining-on-every-at-bat-ways go either. All that being said, I'll miss Nomar.

I don't know all the details of who the Cubs dealt beside Gonzalez because I was in Dallas when the deal went down, but it seems like a great deal for the Cubs. I assume they dealt a pitching prospect or two but they don't really need more pitchers, and were in great need of a hitter like Nomar. Now the Cubs/Cubs fans need to be really nice to him so he resigns. I agree that the deal makes them the frontrunner for the wildcard.

Isn't it a little bizarre that every time someone talks about the Red Sox and their defensive problems, the next thought is "by upgrading the defense, that ought to help Derek Lowe". Here's a thought - Derek Lowe simply isn't that good. He's had a handful of good years, but he seems to be going backwards. If he needs to have an infield consisting of Brooks Robinson, Ozzie Smith, Bill Mazeroski and Keith Hernandez in order to succeed, well then maybe the problem isn't the defense, it's Derek Lowe. I like the guy, I want him to succeed, but every time the Red Sox sacrifice offense in order to improve their defense and then go on to talk about how it will help Lowe, I wonder if maybe they're attacking the problem from the wrong angle.

Definately, get rid of Derek Lowe because he simply isn't worth building a team around. He's had 2 good years, that's it. This is his last year signed with the Red Sox and if they're smart they'll let him go via free agency, or sign him for significantly less money.

I agree with you about Derek Lowe. Last season he was 17-7 with a 4.47 era and a 1.42 whip. 4.47 is not good and 1.42 is horrible. He benefitted from having a great offense that out scored everyone. Now by trading away bats for defense you may actually hurt him because he isnt getting the run support he needs anymore.

Well their defense was terrible. I saw it first hand in both of the last Yankee-Red Sox series. On that game after the fight they made three straight errors to open up the 7th inning. If they hadnt made all those defensive miscues in the late July 1st series maybe they win the series because they gave up so many unearned runs and just didnt make plays that should be made.I agree with you about Derek Lowe. He has a good sinker, he just doesn't throw it well for whatever reason. If he learns how to throw it properly and they get a decent infield he should be a solid #3 or 4 starter. But I'd never look to him to be an ace or #2 guy, he simply doesn't have the ability. Right now he's at best a #5 starter, and more than likely doesn't belong in the rotation. Bad defense or not, Lowe needs to find his sinker again before he can be effective.Pages: 1
