Why is there kicking of any kind in the NFL?

January 13, 2005 at 06:17PM View BBCode

Wouldn't it be a better game if there were no punters, no field goals, no kicking extra points... the only one people like is the kickoff but half the time there is an exciting play it is called back due to a penalty.

I say no kicking at all! Start the half at the 30. Can't get a first down in 4 plays? Tough. The other team gets the ball.

That's just to radical for me. There are exciting plays on punts and there's always the chance of blocked kicks. I'd have to say no on this one.

This is the worst idea Sam Burgess ever cooked up.

I think you messed up when you tried to set up "My Boards," brownbeard

jet,

no those are just my lottery numbers. Seriously I don't know what a "my boards" is but I did notice the mood thing had a bunch of odd numbers. I didn't do anything to it.

that is seriously one of the oddest ideas I have ever heard. In fact I would like to pretend I never read this at all.

He hasn't even told why he doesn't like kicking. But man, I sure hope he is joking.

Speaking of kicking, I'd like to see the influence of gambling reduced by kicking-out at least half of the network halftime scores/highlights. Baseball's honchos go schizo over Pete Rose in order to "protect and maintain" the integrity of the game, but NFL football slides down into the slimey abyss of catering to the world's gamblers.

There should be some middle gound positioning in attitudes in each sport, IMHO.

Bring back 5 or 10 minutes of the Kilgore Rangerettes from beautiful Tyler, Texas, or other halftime entertainment! :)

Where's Frank Glieber and Ray Scott? They'd agree here...

1. The name of the game is FOOTball, as someone pointed out.

2. Without kicking, we would never have seen Garo Ypremian attempt a pass in Super Bowl game.

3. Without kicking, little guys with funny names would have no place in the game.

As an alternative to your ideas...

1. No kicking "specialists" allowed. Guess this goes against my "little guys with funny names" argument, but I can still remember Wayne Walker (LB) kicking in Detroit and Lou Groza (T) kicking in Cleveland and Lou Michaels (DT) kicking in Baltimore. And punters used to be position players, too, at least as backups - King Hill (QB), Pat Studstill (WR), Pat Richter (TE).

2. No fair catches. Five yard cushion for the kick returner to catch the ball, but all punts must be returned.

3. A punt out of bounds is a penalty, just like a kickoff out of bounds.

4. No touchbacks. If a punt or kick goes through the end zone, its worth a point to the kicking team and they free kick from their own 30.

If the punt or kickoff goes OUT OF THE END ZONE on the fly, its a five yard penalty, and the kick is repeated.

5. Field goal defense must include a return man. If a field goal attempt is short and lands anywhere in the field of play, it must be returned. If not, same rules as #4.

6. An exception to the out-of-bounds punt rule is made for the quick kick.

7. Any kick (not just a kickoff) is a free ball after ten yards.

8. Reduce play clock to 20 seconds. Delay of game is a 15 yard penalty.

9. Quarterbacks who do not call their own plays must wear dunce caps on top of their helmets.

10. No more than 2 substitutions allowed between plays for either side.

Former Jets punter Tom Tupa was also the emergency quarterback, and I'm a little ashamed that I knew that.

Who tried this? Oh yeah, the XFL....

3. A punt out of bounds is a penalty, just like a kickoff out of bounds.

Horrible idea. Takes strategy out of the punting game.

4. No touchbacks. If a punt or kick goes through the end zone, its worth a point to the kicking team and they free kick from their own 30.

If the punt or kickoff goes OUT OF THE END ZONE on the fly, its a five yard penalty, and the kick is repeated.

Perhaps a worse idea than eliminating kickers. Can anyone imagine an overtime game being won on a touchback? Absolutely stupid.

5. Field goal defense must include a return man. If a field goal attempt is short and lands anywhere in the field of play, it must be returned. If not, same rules as #4.

All this will do is cut down on the number of long-range field goal attempts, and/or become an effective "punting" strategy, in which the kicking team can bury the return team with a high, short kick. Would wreak havoc on the field position game.

6. An exception to the out-of-bounds punt rule is made for the quick kick.

Yawn.

7. Any kick (not just a kickoff) is a free ball after ten yards.

Wow. You can attempt a field goal now and turn it into a forward play of 30 or 40 yards by recovering it on a bounce. Stupid.

8. Reduce play clock to 20 seconds. Delay of game is a 15 yard penalty.

Won't dignify this with a response.

9. Quarterbacks who do not call their own plays must wear dunce caps on top of their helmets.

Or this.

10. No more than 2 substitutions allowed between plays for either side.

Weren't we talking about kicking?

Tom Tupa actually started for Arizona at QB for a few games. I believe he also played a couple of series while with the Pats.

If you took out the kicking it would be a different game--whatever anyone thinks of the kicking, it would clearly be a very different game without it. However, one change I'd be in favor of is not allowing field goals in overtime. I think you should have to get the ball in the endzone to win in OT. That way it would be less likely that a very good, very even football game is decided by a coin flip.

The NFL needs to adopt the college overtime plan, which is like combining football with baseball. It's brilliant.

I hate college overtime. It's stupid--I'm sorry. I've seen it happen exactly once, but I thought it was relentlessly stupid.

College overtime is so worthless

whoever scores 6 points first wins - 2 FGs or 1 TD.

Apparently you have no clue about the college overtime system.

No, you'd rather see one team take possession and march downfield for a score in sudden death.

I know how college overtime works. Each team gets the ball an equal amount of times and the punting/field position games are taken completely out of the overtime.

What I meant by whoever scores 6 poitns first is that is how the NFL should work. Sudden Death is a lot better than a worthless overly politically correct system.

Maybe they've changed it, but it was like...you get a shot to score, and then if you do, the other team gets to try to answer, or whatever, kind of like a shootout. I just thought it was silly. I personally dislike the idea of ties, but I think sudden death is preferable. Sudden death where you can't kick field goals, because that's just too easy. To qualify all this, I'll mention that I know nothing about football.

I drove from Dallas to college Station to make fun of some Aggies. On the way back I ended up in Tyler Texas :o

That was NOT a fun drive home.
