NHL: Do you miss it and want it back?

January 18, 2005 at 10:42PM View BBCode

I do miss watching the Bruins and NHL in general some. I would like to see it back with some rule cahnges that free up the game and allow it to be more like European hockey. All of the hooking, clutching and grabbing ruin the game and make it seem much less athletic than it really is

I have no interest in the NHL or hockey at all, but I would rather have a sport as America's fourth sport, instead of Nascar, which I do not believe is one.

C'mon...you don't believe auto mechanics is a sport?

I tend to agree, actually. It's definitely competitive and even entertaining, but I hesitate to class it as a sport in the same sense as baseball or basketball, etc.

I miss the NHL, and I do want it back. But I don't care if they shut down the season, especially at this point. And if it helps break the players union, so much the better. Hopefully MLB owners are paying attention.

As for rules changes, I would like to see bigger ice and less clutching, grabbing. I'd like to see all fighting draw automatic five-game suspensions, increased by five games for each subsequent offense. I know a lot of North American fans will howl about that, but European hockey does not tolerate goons and it doesn't seem to affect the popularity of the game over there. I'd also like to see the two-line offside pass eliminated, and goalies equipment brought back down to reasonable size limits, so those guys don't go out there looking like the Michelin tire man.

I like overtime to decide ties, and I have even grown accustomed to the 4-on-4 format. But I don't want to see a shootout. Should basketball games be decided by a free-throw shooting contest? How about a field goal kicking contest to decide football games? Bring out a batting practice pitcher and pick your five best hitters and have a home run hitting contest, instead of playing extra innings??

Besides, if there were bigger ice and less holding and obstruction, I'm guessing fewer games would wind up tied at the end of regulation anyway.

How's Geurin doing with Dalls? I like him when he was with Boston.

I enjoyed playoff hockey, but I am not missing the NHL right now. Maybe once football is over and all we have is college basketball (NBA is no longer a sport), I will miss it.

While the haters out there keep dogging the NBA, you're missing some pretty fun teams in the Suns and (gulp) the Sonics. Phoenix plays like they're straight out of the 80s, and Seattle plays like it's straight out of the continent of Europe. Yeah, there's some shit out there, but this year has actually brought some of the best basketball I've seen in years.

Geurin is doing great for us. Though he suffered a knee injury a few years back but I think that is behind him now.

It's a great season to be a basketball fan in Washington State. The Seattle Sonics are kicking ass, the Washington Huskies are kicking ass, the Gonzaga Bulldogs are kicking ass. Booyah.

As always, it's a terrible year to attempt to be a basketball fan in New York.

I agree, the Suns look really interesting, unfortuantly I haven't had a chance to see any more then highlights of their games. Also the problem is that the Suns need to play against another team, and that team, invariably, will suck, making that game that less interesting to watch. I would much rather take in a good Duke game myself.

Yeah, the ex-hockey player who got away with a double homicide really gave the NHL a black eye.

I'd be interested to hear your reasoning for that. Is it because you don't like watching it on TV or is it something else?

Hockey is very organized. There was a St Louis Blues player who was arrested for some sort of homicide but I here more about Football players gone bad than I do hockey players gone bad.

He is right, you can't make it through a game without seeing a fight it seems like. And you don't hear about hockey players because hockey sucks :P

Re: The St. Louis Blues player

Mike Danton plead guilty to conspiracy for trying to hire a hit man to kill his agent. I never did figure out why he didn't just fire the guy.

Anyway, he had his girlfriend hire a hit man for him. Apparently she is a candidate for that late night show "America's Dumbest Criminals", because she tried to hire an undercover cop. She copped a plea to stay out of jail and implicated Danton.

Does anyone remember Barnaby fighting with the Flyer fan?

Hockey? We have the lowly Blue Jackets with a couple of good young players, but frankly hockey is very boring and whoever heard of a team naming itself after the color of the jackets an army wore???:yawn:

I am willing to bet that 80% of the people who don't like hockey have never played or been to a game.

As a game it doesn't translate well on TV. SO much happens away from the puck that you would be amazed

Ive never played hockey nor been to a game and I love it. I know all of the rules due to video games so its much easier to comprehend on T.V.

Its a shame that the NHL is in lockout. There were talks of Brett Hull coming back to Dallas but he may retire by the time this thing starts back up, which is too bad because he could have set a few more milestones.
