Why no love for the wannabe Yankees in New York? Don't you think that buying all those high-priced players will at least give them a more than decent shot at the playoffs? I even have them winning the wild card in my predictions...

the yankees SUCK i lived in New York and i was all METS!!!! it just isnt fair that a team can buy out the league like that, i have never been of that team and will never be!!! winning the world series my ASS.. no way in hell they can, no matter on who they get, they are buying there players no one on that team has any heart like the angles did, i am all life angle and cub fan. have been since i was 5 and i saw the angles they have to be the 1 team in the mlb that works hard for there guys doesnt just pay them with the yankees luck they will make the pleayoffs then BOSTON will beat them AGAIN!

Yeah, and Pythagoream is a very good owner. Especially when he uses his theories in regards to his favorite angles.

Anyway, back to Goat's original question. I think that the NL Wild Card will come out of the East but I think that it will be Florida. The Braves will win the division for the gazillionth time in a row. The Mets are stuck in a state of constant mediocrity. They will claim that they are going young and rebuilding yet 6 months later they are signing Cliff Floyd. Then they will start sucking, try the youth thing again and then go on another offseason spending spree bringing in more old veterans. Beltran is a nice pickup, but Pedro is hit or miss. They just made a very strange trade today as they picked up Kaz Ishii from LA in exchange for Jason Phillips. With Mike Piazza deteriorating behind the plate I would have thought that Phillips would have been a good guy to have around. They could even put Piazza at first full time and start Phillips at catcher (I realize that Phillips isn't great but a young catcher is a young catcher and they have no real successor for Piazza now). I guess they figure that Vance Wilson can help shoulder the load but I doubt it. They do have some nice young players like David Wright and Jose Reyes (when healthy but he has been extremely fragile in his young career) but then again they trade away a lot of good young talent too (like the Zambrano-Kazimir trade debacle last year). I think that they will be a much improved team from last year and could make some noise in the playoff race but I like Florida and Atlanta alittle more.

Are you kidding? Man, Pythagoras is THE giant in Angle team history, he totally dwarfs anyone else who's ever worked for the franchise. Not only does he have the mad skillz with the theories, but he totally put all his money into the club and lowered beer prices AT THE SAME TIME! TAHT'S TOTALLY CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As for Beltran, they paid a lot to get a guy who hit .258 for the Astros last year. Yes he had a terrific postseason and yes he's a terrific player and I don't want to sell him short but really, what's around him in the lineup? Piazza is over the hill, Wright will likely be good but he's only got half a season's experience and won't be dominating this year. Is anyone convinced that Matsui can play either at second base or at a championship level for a major league team and lets wait and see if Reyes can stay healthy. Part of Reyes's game is his speed and if his hamstrings are a chronic problem then he could have serious problems. Mike Cameron is a career long disappointment as an offensive player and was also disappointing defensively last season and Cliff Floyd has always been overrated-especially for a guy that has never been able to stay healthy. Seriously. Beltran is the only hitter in their lineup that has any credientials at this point in his career. I can't see the Mets any higher than fourth.

The reason there is no love for the Mets is that they're just not that good. Signing Pedro is only a slight improvement in the pitching staff over Al Leiter who went to Florida. Lets be honest here. Pedro has some more wins over the past few seasons, mostly because he's been on a vastly better team. In terms of ERA, Pedro is certainly impressive. He should win more games for New York than Leiter would but we're still talking 15-17 range for Pedro. I'm not sold on either Benson or Zambrano to be the saviors and losing Traschel will certainly hurt the staff as he's been their best (or at least most consistent pitcher) over the past few seasons. Beltran was a great signing - he's a proven star who is going to be very good, it's better to sign a top-tier player than to spend half as much as someone who might suck and at best still wont be as good - that's the kind of spending that kills teams, and that was the Mets' gameplan before this year. The Benson contract was dumb, as were the countless others given to mediocre pitchers this offseason, but it was really the only really bad contract given out by the Mets this year. And unlike some teams that gave out these horrible deals, they can afford to eat a few (which they are already doing). This is a much improved team with a few high-talent young players like David Wright and Jose Reyes, and will contend.

As for the yankees, after having a 3 game lead on boston in the playoffs then blowing it i dont get how you can ever come back with confidence. I think we will be able to tell who will win the dividsion by after the first series of the season when they meet. i think opening day for these teams are HUGE who will start the season with a lead and on top of that who has more heart and confidence. I pick Boston over yeankees.

That is one of the silliest things you've said yet. The first season of the series means basically nothing except to pundits who have to fill column space and airtime with some sort of content, and deconstruct every little nuance of the series because of it. You can have your heart and confidence squad, I'll take my talent and ability team, and we'll crush your confident ass every time.

I have never understood why people say games in September are more important... if you take care of business early in the season you don't have to worry so much about the pressure of September.

And no I don't think that the Yankees are worried because of their collapse last year. Are the Red Sox worried about finishing second to them for each of the last 7 years? Probably not. If anything the collapse should serve as incentive to beat the Red Sox this year, not to intimidate them. They aren't 23 year old rookies whose confidence has been damaged because of a bad performances, these are battle tested vets. But the first series of the year is pretty meaningless because it is just three games out of 162 and everyone is still trying to get in the groove for the rest of the season.

Each game is important and September games are only important if you are in a tight race. But if you are dominant throughout the season like the '98 Yankees were then you can rest in September and start players like Homer Bush.And no I don't think that the Yankees are worried because of their collapse last year. Um, the Red Sox were the champions of both the AL and ML. I'm sure Steinbrenner is really pumping his fist in delight over claiming another AL East crown, but the fact remains that the Red Sox finished ahead of the Yankees last year.

I have the Mets fourth, but I think 2-4 in that division could go to basically anybody, its a tossup. I think they will beat up on each other too much for any of them to get the wild card, though.Pages: 1
