Don't know much about this guy, but he's won everywhere's he's been. Toronto in the early 90's, Baltimore in the late 90's, and Seattle in the early 00's.
Will he be better than Wade? I think so.
Will he get them to a World Series? ??????

Anybody know anything about this guy and if he's a good fit for the Phillies?

Yeah, this rumor came out yesterday morning. As a Phillies fan, I'm not at all thrilled here. He did a good job building in Toronto but my impression in Baltimore and Seattle is that he took over talented teams and then abandoned them to the abyss. I'd much rather have seen Gerry Hunsicker in Philadelphia. The other strike on Gillick is that at age 68 he's probably only going to be manager for 3-4 years at which time the Phillies will likely promote Ruban Amaro Jr. to the post with could be a disaster (similar to what happened when Gillick left the post in Seattle). Finally, the third strike, is that I don't believe you can be an effective absentee boss and that's what Gillick plans to do as he lives in Toronto and plans to stay there and perform his GM duties from there. Doesn't work. Not a good situation. Still, typical of the Phillies under Dave Montgomery.

Good old Stand Pat. I'm sure the Mariners fans can speak about his half-assed GMing.

Gillick is pretty much the reason why I will one day kill. And Bavasi is worse.

Is there a record for consecutive 5th best team in the league finishes?

Great - I'm a big Phillies fan as well and I guess this is just par for the course. Fans are looking for excitement - this move sure doesn't build the anticipation. Guess we'll have to see if he's willing to eat some salary and get rid of Thome & Lieberthal. Getting a true #1 starter would be a good place to start. The Phils haven't had one since Schilling left town to win his 2 championships.
