At age 38 Jeter is hitting .323 with an OPS over .800 and leads the major league in hits.
It would seem at this point that Jeter will probably end up, at worst, 6th on the All time list and has a reasonable chance at ending up 5th behind only Rose, Cobb, Aaron and Musial. Last night, having a nightcap after a reception I attended, I was pointedly informed by two baseball "fans" that Jeter was " a marginal Hall of Fame candidate, at best".

I can't stand jeter, myself. More to the point, I can't stand the Yankees fan worship of jeter. I think he's been terribly overrated for much of his career. Which is kind of weird when you think about it, because there's absolutely no question he's a first ballot hofer.

I don't understand why people say he's overrated. Perhaps as a fielder, but as an offensive player and a leader, especially in the post season, not so overrated. He plays hard, leads well, and gets timely hits. He was a great player on great teams when the Yanks were winning a handful of World Series. HOFer for sure, overrated, maybe, but not a lot.

I would love to see him stick around long enough to break the all time hits record and I'm not even a Yankees fan...Jeter is all class...I doubt he can play that long but it would be nice to see...

why does baseball-reference say Jeter is 11th, but espn and them say 10th? i think its cuz of the discrepancy on Cap Anson's total...why dont they straighten it out

jeter, for the bulk of his career, was an above average SS playing on a great team. he had occasional swings into (regular season) greatness and occasional swings into mediocrity. he has generally handled himself with class and has a great reputation as a leader. his postseason reputation is kind of overblown (his career regular season and career postseason numbers are nearly identical) although he did make maybe the most heads-up play i have ever seen to throw giambi out at home.
but had he had the same career in, say, kansas city, he would have been far less likely to have been viewed as the second coming of christ. he is a first ballot hall of famer and the best shortstop the yankees have ever had (although that's not saying a whole lot) but with the possible exception of '99 and '06 he was never nearly as good as yankees fans and the new york hype-machine made him out to be. he is maybe the only guy i have extrememly disliked as a player where i can honestly say it's not really because of him.

he is a fine example of an older hitter that can still hit. the key to him is, he knows when he gets his pitch, he better go after it. he take a walk if they nibble. if they throw his pitch though, he isn't waiting around for another one. you have to admire that.

"above average SS", while technically true, isn't strong enough. For 15-plus years he's been one of the best, i dunno, 2-4 SS in the league? With 30 teams, 14th qualifies as above average. Jeter has been consistently among the elite when it comes to shortstops.
Putting up nearly identical numbers in the postseason as the regular season is certainly impressive, considering the greater pitching quality and additional pitching changes in postseason games.
as for not liking him because he's on the Yankees, can't argue against that, that's just an opinion from the haters, and this thread was created for you. I wouldn't want 30 Kansas Citys in the league, but a lot of people seem to.

mediocrity is a little harsh...maybe a couple years ago when he hit .270, but even if you count that, I don't think one occasion counts as "occasional"."above average SS", while technically true, isn't strong enough. Yes it's the Anson thing, ESPN etc. don't consider the National Association as a major league so Anson's stats from 1871-75 aren't counted.
MLB doesn't credit the National Association either so I guess technical Jeter is now 10th all time not 11th.

Yes it's the Anson thing, ESPN etc. don't consider the National Association as a major league so Anson's stats from 1871-75 aren't counted.

it's not because he's on the yankees. there are lots of guys who are and have been on the yankees that i don't have any dislike for. and as i said with jeter it's not him, per se, it's the overblown hype-ola that was built around him, through no real fault of his own. he's a very good player who has been on on some great teams. that doesn't make him god. he's the best shortstop the yankees have ever had. but he's not in their top 5. he's probably in their top 10. is he one of the best 10 SS ever? maybe. maybe not. i haven't looked at that list either.

The reason you stated for extremely disliking him is because he plays for a successful team in a city with a "hype-machine" and lots of fans and media. In simpler terms, because he's on the Yankees. Kansas City was your example of a team you would prefer a player like him to be on, so you could like him. I interpreted that to mean you would like it if all teams were like Kansas City and no teams were like the Yankees.

if there were fifteen missiouris and fifteen kansases, wouldn't there be 30 kansas cities? we could keep those 30 states, plus all the states where the SEC schools are, California of course, give New Mexico and Wyoming to Mexico (we could insist they take Utah in the deal, but we wouldn't want to push it, it could be a near thing), give Washington and Michigan to Canada (and insist they take on Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana and maybe Wisconisn, perhaps even South Dakota and Nebraska). We incorportate the parts of Louisiana and Florida with the good football schools into the respective adjoining states and give what's left of Louisiana to France and whatever is left of Florida to Haiiti. why can't this not work?[Edited on 9-20-2012 by tm4559]

What about Oregon, can we (Canada) have that as well, and Maine we want Maine for the seafood .We'll take the Dakotas, Minnesota, Montana and Idaho for sure and I'm good with Wisconsin but Michigan is a bit of a problem and I draw the line at the Nebraska thing though, no way we want Cornhuskers .

I have much more hatred for the hype machine when it spits things out at me like Tebow. Jeter has had hof career he is ok in my book.

then we come to Wisconsin. there is a cow on the back of it. and a hunk of tasteless cheese. and some other stuff even more thrilling, i think an ear of corn. Wisconsin. the scandanavians went there, and said, "Wow. this place is awful. We'll take Minnesota. Yah."

Here in Columbus, the Bucky's are almost as bad as Michigan, and no one likes the Brewers. The Packers are on the verge of becoming insufferable. Take Wisconsin, PLEASE!

yeah, its a done deal. Wisconsin is in Canada's column. to really make it bad for them, maybe the Braves will move back there. then they can send the Brewers back to Seattle, and rejoin the American League. Canada is vastly underrated when it comes to straightening stuff out. they big WARP, it just don't get no play in the press, that's all.
