I'll be pulling for the Huskies as always, but they got the scary 5-12 seed matchup. Sweet 16 isn't an unreasonable goal though...

They did horribly on the seeds and bubble teams. Jebus. Missouri State and Cincy should have been in instead of Utah State and Airforce.
Texas has a tough road. They should beat Penn pretty easily. I'd guess they should beat NC State or Cal but you never know with the Princeton offense, and Leon Powe is a monster for Cal. Then they've already played their most likely sweet 16 opponents, Iowa and West Virginia. They beat both, but they were very close. Then they'll probably have to face Duke. LaMarcus Aldridge better step up in this tournament, especially if he's even considering the NBA.

I like the Zags, but get real. The last 2 months they have spent beating horrible teams in a weak conference...and BARELY doing so. They will have forgotten how to play the big boys. IF the Zags get past the Hoosiers, they will be out against UCLA

By the Hoosiers?? SDSU has the ability to beat not only Indiana, but Gonzaga as well.

I pick Kansas to win it all.
They're too young, and I think the pressure will break them at some point. IF they get to Sweet 16, they have Memphis waiting, which will be very difficult test. If they got to Sweet 16, lost to Memphis, they'd finish 27-8. A great year for a team of freshmen and sophomores.
Still, they're a really young team - fun to watch - lots of highlight film plays - but prone to turnovers.
See my comment about them in the Cinderalla thread.

I just saw them dispatch a strong Texas team in the big XII championship, the same team that destroyed Kansas a few weeks back. That performance looked like they could handle a pressure filled game to me.

Overall, I'm not sure about the seedings. Seems hard to put a 26-2 team whose only regular season loss was to #18 NC State on the road in the #8 seed. But I am sure that there are too many automatic bids to garbage conferences.
Teams with absolutely no business in the NCAA tournament: Albany, Belmont, Hampton, Monmouth, Montana, Northwestern State, South Alabama, Southern, Winthrop.
One or two of these schools may pull a first round upset, but most of them will get beaten - badly. Giving automatic bids to these schools screws teams like:
Cincinnati (19-12), Florida State (19-9), Colorado (20-9), Creighton (19-9), Missouri State (20-8), Michigan (18-10), Seton Hall (18-11).
If you put any of the teams on that first list in the Big 10, Big 12, ACC, SEC, Big East, Pac 10, Mo Valley they probably wouldn't finish in the top half of the conference.
NCAA football and basketball are at opposite extremes. In football, they exclude too many good teams. In basketball, they include way too many mediocre teams. They need to play I-AA basketball.

Actually in NCAA basketball many good teams are excluded as well, like the teams you mentioned above. :P

Perhaps after you exclude these teams, for an encore you can kick a puppy or punch an old lady in the face.

You want to be in the tournament? Win more games. Don't collapse down the stretch (Michigan), go one and done in your conference tournament (Cincinnati) or lose to Virginia Tech (FSU).

Seriously. Who wants to see all the big conference teams that went 7-9 in their leagues? The whole reason they have automatic bids is because the NCAA Tournament was originally designed as a reward for teams that were already champions in their own regions.
Now everybody thinks that the tournament is supposed to decide who the "best" team is, which is ridiculous. The tournament is a celebration of the best things in college basketball, and that does not have to include all the big-money schools.
Winthrop et al. are what makes the NCAA Tournament so much fun.

Yeah, who wants all the "best" teams in a tourney that eventually decides who the "best" team in the land is anyways. That would just be silly.

It IS silly, YAS. Think about it. The team that cuts down the Indy nets will be the team that wins six straight. They will not beat the other 64 teams--only a fraction of them. To actually determine the best team, you'd have to have each team play each of the other 64 schools in best-of-three series!
The winning team will have luck as well as mad skillz. They will be the NCAA Tournament champions, but not necessarily the best team. And everyone should be fine with that.

There is zero chance that any of those teams that just missed the NCAA tournament would have won the whole thing. The tournament might not pick the best team every year, but it always weeds out pretenders like Michigan. So what's the difference if a little school from the No One's Heard Of Our Conference (the NOHOOC, of course) takes a spot from the 9th team from the Big East? It will have no effect on the outcome, and wouldn't you rather see a bunch of players who are happy to be there and might even put a scare into a top seed (or even win outright on occasion) over a bunch of dumpy losers from a big conference bubble team who screwed around all year and fell into a berth simply due to their proximity to teams that are
actually good?

They did play well yesterday, and didn't wilt down the stretch against a veteran team. KU is a team that's grown tremendously over the course of the season. But to win the NCAA title, they have to play under that kind of pressure six times in a row, and that's asking an awful lot from a team where four freshman and three sophomores get the bulk of the playing time.
I would not be shocked if they won it all. They have the talent. But, the game is about more than just putting the most talent on the floor. They are still very young and prone to mistakes at times. I think asking them to win six big games in a row is a pretty tall order for a group this young.

The difference is, those teams were only excluded because too many lame conferences get automatic bids.

CG: "Perhaps after you exclude these teams, for an encore you can kick a puppy or punch an old lady in the face."
The purpose of the NCAA tournament is not beneficence towards weaker conferences. It's to determine the best D-1 basketball team in the country.
Your analogy to puppies and old ladies simpy reinforces the suggestion that there are too many weak teams from poor conferences that get automatic bids.
