So the FC Sounders game was pretty censored awesome. I'm kinda liking this whole "MLS in Seattle" thing.

They're really good for an expansion team. Montero is one of the better acquisitions in recent league history (the best goalscorer in Colombia, and they managed to get him on loan).

The crowd was pretty awesome too. They're adding teams in Portland and Vancouver over the next couple years, so there will be a nice northwest rivalry going on.

Yeah, and Seattle did that without Freddie Ljunberg. Maybe he should just stay injured- they were unstoppable. Red Bulls are a shell of who they were now that they have lost Altidore and van der Bergh

Yeah, Montero is pretty beastly. The FC Sounders are looking much better than you'd expect an expansion franchise to be. This is pretty damn exciting.

Honestly, I'm not expecting a whole lot out of Ljunberg. 35-year-olds past their prime shouldn't be counted on to carry a team anyway.

He'll sell tickets and play the "veteran leader" role well, but people shouldn't be expecting him to be a huge factor on the field.

Montero is a gem. There aren't a whole lot of midfielders in the entirety of MLS that will keep up with him if he plays as good as he did Thursday consistently.

And, if he plays that way consistenly, I doubt he'll be in Seattle long.

Sidenote- did anyone enjoy seeing Juan Pablo Angel frustrated to pieces?

He was really, really bad. That New York team looks really, really bad. I guess they're going to go all out when they get their stadium done, trying to sign big names and what not, but for now they look like they'll really struggle.

I think I'm going to stay up and watch North Korea-UAE, just to...observe. This should be fun. Or not. Probably not, as it will be 3:30 by time it's done, and these are two mediocre at best sides. But still!

censored it, I'm going to keep a log of this. I'll edit it throughout the night.

7 minutes before kickoff: Kim Il Sung Stadium is packed, 70 thousand plus, but there's hardly any noise. It's as if they are observing a moment's silence..but they aren't.

5 minutes before kickoff: The flags are marched toward midfield, and a bit of cheering can be heard from the crowd. The players come onto the pitch, and some more cheering can be heard. Still not much, but at least it's something.

4 minutes before kickoff: oh fucking hell, I thought this feed wasn't going to have a commentator, but here's this annoying motherfucker blathering on about the history between the two sides.

2 minutes before kickoff: The anthem was sung by most, but not all, which sort of surprised me. I don't know why I expected some mass games type shit.

1 minute in: No sustained cheering, but a buzz grows as North Korea advances with the ball. North Korea earns a free kick, some people shout, but they shut up again as it's wasted. The buzz picks up everytime North Korea do anything.

3 minutes in: Now UAE gets a bit of sustained ball possession, and it is once again deathly silent. As they get nearer to goal, they start to..I don't even know what it is. It may be some sort of booing, I guess. Anyway, they make some weird noise in unison as the UAE players ready to pass. A loud cheer as a cross is wasted, caught by the DPRK keeper.

6 minutes in: I've decided that it's not a boo, but just an expression of extreme worry from the North Korean fans.

7 minutes in: The commentator finally gets to the social aspect of this shit. Christ, this guy is sort of an idiot. Ha, it's funny, acuz you were just thinking that as you read my commentary. Right? Right.

9 minutes in: There's one guy that starts leading cheers, which never last more than 3 seconds. The circumstances dictate that I wonder whether that is his job.

11th minute: The North Koreans with a bit of technical play. Not bad, actually. Doesn't lead to anything.

15th minute: I can't describe just how bad this commentator is. Reggie Miller times infinity.

17th: North Korea is pretty legit. Although I guess they'd have to be to get to this point. I blame timezones for not knowing just how legit they were.

19th minute: The people in the crowd not wearing brown really stick out.

20th: Not all of these guys actually play in North Korea, apparently. A few in Japan/South Korea, and a couple in Russia. I wonder how that works.

22nd: WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS GUY TALKING ABOUT

27th: I dig the North Korean rocking the yellow boots. I'll pretend it's some sort of political statement.

32nd: So, apparently they let Zainichi Koreans play in the team, and they can play their domestic football outside the country, but the one's actually born in North Korea can't. Which sort of makes sense.

40th minute: I don't think I'm going beyond halftime with this shit. Yes, yes, I know. How will you go on? I don't know, either. I'm going to blame this commentator, of indistinguishable nationality. Fuck his accent, wherever it's from.

45+: UAE looking the more likely to score now. I wouldn't be surprised if this ends 0-0, with both sides squandering a decent number of chances. And there's the halftime whistle. They start playing old Italian music over the stadium speakers, and I think that means it's time for me to shut this down. I will note that I'm disappointed that they haven't shown the picture of "Dear Leader" yet. Argh.

What, if anything, can you tell me about Real Salt Lake (Seattle's opponent tomorrow night)? Easy win, easy loss, or something in between?

They were pretty decent last season. No real great players, but a solid unit with solid players. They didn't have much turnover during the offseason, to my knowledge, so I'd expect them to play pretty well right out the gate. Should be a pretty decent match.

edit: English, motherfucker.

So in other words, Montero is going to own them. Ljunberg should be healthy enough to play, as well.

If Seattle plays half as good against RSL as they did against Red Bulls, it won't be a game. RSL is weak; they haven't been a force since they lost Adu.
Cubsfan13

They aren't a force, but they're alright. They don't have any real imposing players, but they're just boring enough to be sort of dangerous. Not that that makes sense.

Some pretty decent internationals today. Nothing really good, but a lot of goodish games.

It's official: I want to have Montero's babies.

I continue to be impressed by how well-run Seattle is for an expansion team.

Someone please tell me why Montero is playing in MLS. And when the coach of last yrs champions takes over your team, you're in good shape. Add in to that an already proven and competent management firm from USL, and you have a recipe for instant success. Seattle / Toronto would be an incredible finals matchup.

Also, the Saudi Arabia / Iran game was ... vicious.

I've asked a number of people, including a few Colombians, why Montero is in MLS, and I'm yet to really get an answer. The best guess is that they figure he may be able to do so well as to drive up his value. Supposedly Real Betis were already interested before, but I guess they weren't satisfied with the proposed fee.

Also, FSC have now officially outbid ESPN for the Champions League rights. Supposedly.

Whatever that means. I figure it probably means less exposure, but possibly better coverage. We'll see. I like having ESPN 360 feeds as long as I don't have a TV, though, so I'd like for those to stay.

So am I right to assume that MLS contracts aren't guaranteed, and that Montero is likely to be playing for Manchester United next year, so we should enjoy the brief time we have him here in Seattle?
Cubsfan13

March 31, 2009 at 07:07AM View BBCode

Well, they aren't guaranteed, but that's not why he won't be playing for Seattle next year.

Deportivo Cali, a club in Colombia, actually "owns" him. They sent him on loan to Seattle, because Montero really wanted some of that hipster pussy (I don't know, it seems like it would be prevalent. just go with it), or whatever. That loan is up at the end of the season, and after that Montero will likely be sold to the highest bidder (probably not Manchester United or anything, but a pretty decent sized club, I'd imagine. dude's 21).

Presumably Seattle are just paying the salary while he's here, and didn't have to pay any sort of fee to get him over. Which is a pretty huge coup, even for one season. After that, who knows, they may go after Henry or some censored .

I should point out that actual details on all this are mad sketchy (yo), in brilliantly South American fashion.
