So I'm not sure what sort of precedent there is for match-fixing at the World Cup but that match was fixed.

Just watched the game on replay, terrible call but in a game full of bad calls.

So, does England suck? Algeria is supposedly terrible.

Algeria have defended England really well, but they've not generated a lot of scoring chances. England should be able to get a goal here late -- a goal by Algeria is almost unimaginable.

Ha, Beckham is pissed.
Algeria are clearly content with the tie. They must like their chances against the USA.

Well, I think they just mostly really didn't like their chances against England. They did go forward/keep possession a decent amount, but I don't think they really have a particularly good goal scorer to get on the end of chances. Obviously, I'm still terrified that they'll find one by Wednesday. But maybe the fact that they'll really have to bomb forward and look for goals against the US could play into our hands. Or, you know. The opposite of that. Either way.
I guess that means the US definitely goes through with a win, no matter what. And a draw could get them through, I s'pose, although they certainly can't count on that.

Yes, the match with Algeria is truly terrifying. We still would go through with a tie if England tie Slovenia without closing our +2 edge in goals scored.

We just need to win, and not worry about what happens with anyone else.

Here's what the tiebreakers look like for the U.S.:
U.S. Wins, England Wins
U.S. Advances.
U.S. Wins the group if:
1) They beat Algeria by more than England beats Slovenia.
2) Or if they both win by the same amount and England outscores the U.S. by fewer than 2 goals.
3) Or if they both win by the same amount and England outscores the U.S. by exactly 2 goals and the U.S. wins a coin toss.
U.S. Wins, England/Slovenia Tie
U.S. Advances.
U.S. Wins the group if:
1) They beat Algeria by more than 1 Goal
2) Or if they beat Algeria by 1 Goal and the U.S. outscores Slovenia
3) Or if they beat Algeria by 1 Goal and the U.S. and Slovenia score the same number of goals and the U.S. wins a coin toss.
U.S. Wins, Slovenia Wins
U.S. Advances
U.S. cannot win the group.
U.S./Algeria Tie, England Wins
U.S. is eliminated
U.S./Algeria Tie, England/Slovenia Tie
U.S. Advances if:
1) England outscores the U.S. by fewer than 2 goals.
2) England outscores the U.S. by exactly 2 goals and the U.S. wins a coin toss.
U.S./Algeria Tie, Slovenia Wins
U.S. Advances
The U.S. cannot Advance if they lose to Algeria.

Well thank god england tied though. Since both teams go at the same time, Slovenia is much more inclined to play hard for the tie/win to clinch it.

Wouldn't the U.S. also advance if we lost to Algeria and England loses to Slovenia without scoring 2 more goals than the U.S.?

So awesome. This is a case where I will certainly rejoice in the upset for the sake of the upset.
(Slovakia need to beat Italy. This needs to happen.)

In reality, this is all likely setting up for Italy to oust the Dutch on penalties in the round of 16.

(They just really, really need to do away with penalty kicks. Not as if that needs to be said, but still.)
