The variance in where people put them is quite awesome, though.

It seems like ESPN is pitching them as this year's Rays, but I don't see it. They have some nice pieces to work with, but Dayton Moore has made some incredibly dumb moves this offseason (like trading for Mike Jacobs, thus blocking Billly Butler and Kila Ka'aihue. And signing Jose Guillen. And Kyle Farnsworth. And Willie Bloomquist).

I see Moore as Bill Bavasi-lite: a guy that has a decent-to-good eye for prospects, but doesn't have the first clue how to evaluate major-leaguers. His recent moves smack of the kind of results-based analysis that ruined Bavasi (and Chuck LaMar, and Dave Littlefield, and Jim Bowden, and any other GM that remained stuck in their ways even while other organizations moved on to the 21st century).

I don't hate the Royals (it's impossible to hate the Royals), but they are just not setting themselves up for success. For a small-market team, they should be emulating the Rays or A's. Instead, they chose to emulate the Pirates, and down that path lies only ruination.....and Jose Guillen.

For the record, I was posting with a hint of sarcasm (obviously) when I first put my predictions out there, ignoring completely the wiles of major sports networks and websites.

Then I stumble upon deadspin (one of the few sites not blocked by the defense intranet) the other day and realize people were actually serious about the Royals winning the AL Central.

Serious!
