i think most people would agree with that, which is why so many are pointing out how wrong (they believe) khaz is for holding the opposite opinion.

I can't compare them age to age because if the difference in injuries in their careers. Junior turned to paper when he was traded to the Reds. Henderson was fortunate enough to not suffer any serious injuries over his career.

Griffey did miss a ton of time with Cincinnati .

Between 2001-06 he played only 554 games averaging just over 90 games per year, which definitely cost him reaching 3,000 hits and 2,000 RBI and maybe even the 700 home run level .

all true. none of which has anything to do with him not hanging around until he was completely ineffective, a la rickey henderson. because that's exactly what junior did.

eh, its like 98 at bats or something. Jr hit 19 home runs last season, he wasn't that terrible. he didn't have it here this year, he retired, he could have "hung around" until the end of the season if he wanted to, or they could release him.

I think Junior just got fed up with having his naps interrupted so he decided to just retire.

Anyone know why Griffey Jr. changed numbers ?

He wore #24 with the Mariners and then #30 with the Reds, his Dad's number, then switched to #3 in 2006, then he wore #17 and #30 for the White Sox .

Crappy Tony Perez wore #24 with the Reds, and had his number retired, which is why Griffey had to switch. Not sure why he switched to #3, but that number is retired with the White Sox (Harold Baines. Like, really?), so he had to switch again, I guess.

I dug a little further with the White Sox numbers, Crede was #24 and Swisher was #30 when Jr. got there.

Swisher switched to #1 so Griffey could have #30 but I guess Griffey wore #17 for a game or something.

Still don't know why the #3 in Cincinnati though.

I know Griffey sure was the sexier player, but Bags essentially posted a .400 OBP with good power 9 seasons in a row. And he topped .450 3 times. I'm a big Griffey fan, and I'd take his peak over Bagwell's, but offensively Bagwell was also force of nature.

Also, I have a feeling that Rickey could still draw 100 walks for an MLB team right now. N

According to Griffey's wiki, he switched to #3 to honor his three children. No word on why he wore 17 with the Sox, though.

Just once I'd love to hear a major league answer that question with, "It was available."

They did some thing on "best players by number" back in the day. Over all sports and such. The worst player who was the best for his number was #69. It was some mediocre offensive lineman who made the pro bowl like twice or something.
