In the 2015 MLB draft, 1215 players were taken. In *most* sim drafts, 100 players are taken. 100 players would represent a little less than than 8% of those taken in the MLB draft, or (depending on year) the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds, plus all the sandwich picks (supplemental/competitive balance). This data is mostly for perspective.
In SimD, the 1st round represents 16% of the players taken (given a 16 team league), or 194 MLB players taken. In this case, 194 would be 6.5 rounds (the avg round in the 2015 draft was 29ish players).
So...look at it this way, our 1st round in SD represents something like 6+ rounds of real players taken.
Sounds a little less preposterous, no?
---
On another topic, I played 5+ free leagues before I started paying to play. I also read the FAQ and all the rules. Everything is there for all players, new and old, to understand the game.
While the free league drafts (speaking of the OS drafts, not the initial) are not 100% representative of the speed league drafts, they give new owners a template for "value" per draft slot.
If someone chooses to jump into the pay side of the game w/o playing in any free leagues, more power to them. But any information "gap" they have, will be on them at that point.

Good point but your math is a little off, in a 16 team sim there are 80 players drafted, not 100, so round one, and all rounds, represent 20% of drafted players. Given your 2015 MLB numbers that would mean the 1st round in the sim would be equivalent to 243 players, which in 2015 would have taken you to about 2/3rd the way through round 8 .

You're right...I looked at the pool and not the players taken.
That's what I get for "mathing while tired".

If you read the very first sentence in the original post ... the importance of the first round pick ... not emphasizing to newcomers on the subtle differences between Sim D and authentic baseball ... you have proven me point. Where the first round pick is pretty much the "only contenders" to be all-stars and hall-of-famers.
However, the theory should be false theory. For the same could be said for the letter grade rating for each attribute. A draft is simply a draft. Should be consider a selection of all who qualify to be an all-star/hall-of-famers. not just the first round. More emphasis should be placed on development, not the draft. More on coaching, ... but go figure that number one is a guarantee hit. In the upcoming WBL draft, got two number ones. Think we didn't know what was up?
The truth is there are so many factors unrelated to the basic version (Dynasty Leagues) for example, parts of the game not represented: balks, ejections, rundowns, distance of HRs, speed of strikeout pitches, free agency and holdouts, waiver wire penalties, and more (or one can go to find a league playing as such rules). Certain stats like walk-off hits and walk-off home runs, putting a mark on past hall of fame player's baseball card like a gold emblem or HOF ... to recognize right away their in the hall ... something without going to the hall screen.
What has been explained by the vets is that Sim Dynasty is requested by many members to stay true to a board in which some of us has never heard of. However, the games played were Superstar Baseball and Baseball Strat-o-Matic which has always intrigued me interest in simulation play.
Thus, are goal is to flow and win whatever the rules.

again, the majority of your issues have been addressed, to varying degrees, in the more custom playing rules available in the 'advanced' leagues. why not try one or two and see what you think? then maybe you can offer some input into tweaking the systems we have rather than complaining about problems that have already been looked at.

Your point is only proven if you have data to back is up...so far I haven't seen anything past some SSS stuff. Otherwise all you're giving us is a series of unsubstantiated complaints.
As to the "only contenders thing"...
A 3 year stretch in the DNL (system 3 minors...seems this is the league type your main complaint covers) produced the following:
19 All Stars drafted in the 2nd round
14 All Stars drafted in the 3rd round
0 All Stars drafted in the 4th round
1 All Star drafted in the 5th round
But as others have noted....play in a variable dev league. This isn't your 1st complaint thread, and they all seem to boil down to this: read the rules and educate yourself about each leagues variables before joining.
Or offer to write some new code for Tyson. Either way, it's on you.

We do have this. Click on any player card in your league's HOF and you can't miss it.

on a computer, there are large SD Hall of Fame logos all over the place behind the player card. are you on a mobile app or something? i don't know what it's like on one of those.

I've done a couple of 30-year analysis of the draft in the 212 year old TWL. In neither case was the number one pick the most valuable (judging either by all-star selections or all-star votes. We are a variable development league.
Sure, the #1 pick was in the overall top 5 for the 30-year period, but the best picks varied from #2-#7 overall.

All-Star selections might not be the best metric to use. It heavily favors guys with good health. Some of my most valuable players have yellow (or is it orange?)-letter health but have less All-Star appearances than my guys with good health.
Also, the guy with the #1 pick might not be very good at drafting.

For example, James Hebrue is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite position player on my roster. Yet he only has 3 All-Star appearances in 8 full-time seasons... all the while carrying a .316 lifetime average and .388 lifetime OBP. But he only plays in 120-ish games a year, so he doesn't get the All-Star votes because of the formula used for that award.

The reason for not getting the All-Star votes is due to the 3.1 per game qualifying for the batting title rule - at least 502 ABs.
To be consider for many awards and to make the All-Star team, a player must have the 3.1 per game qualifications - not sure if there is such a thing in the true game. Seems like to qualify for awards and an All-Star team should be set at 400 ABs and 50+ IPs knowing these contributions deserve recognition.
Then again, maybe not...
BTW - The health rating has been more consistent in adapting more variance than in seasons past in the Wally Berger League.

This is not true, as you can clearly see by viewing Hebrue's stats he is an All Star in 2018 with only 489 plate appearances, the 3.1 per 162 game requirement is based on plate appearances not at bats.
Since All Stars are decided by a formula that is weighted on "counting stats", as opposed to ratios, a players playing time is extremely important but there is no minimum requirement.

Nice ... Either way, it was simply a best guess on the formula being used.

You don't have to guess about the All Star formula:
For position players, all star votes are calculated using this formula: RBIs + Total Bases + Runs + Walks + SBs - (SO *.25) - (CS * 2) - Errors - (AB / 8)
For pitchers, this formula is used: CG * 5 + Shutouts * 5 + No Hitters * 10 + Wins * 10 - Losses * 5 - Earned Runs * 2 - Hits - Walks + Strikeouts - HBP + IP * 3 + Saves * 5
it and many other pieces of useful info are all included in the Sim Wiki which can be accessed by the "Help" drop down on your team's home page.
