I am certainly not a Boston Fan but it does seem that being designated as a closer in Boston is almost a death wish. Rivera did spend time setting up John Wettland. In 97, Wettland wento Texas and the legend (Mariano) was born!

There seems to be quite a few nice young pitchers this year, as well. Homer Bailey, Phil Hughes, and Mike Pelfrey just to name a few off the top of my head.

Even if Papelbon blows a few saves it will be less the if Joel Pinero was closing. I would be more concerned with his shoulder, even though they are going to monitor it closely. I have visions of Pedro pitching in meaningless games in 2001 while hurt. Thats what Boston does with injured pitchers, trots them out to pitch again :D
