The best baseball players in the world play in the MLB (if not in Seattle) ((sorry)). MLS likely isn't among the twenty best soccer leagues in the world. I mean, the problem for MLS isn't really that not enough people enjoy soccer, it's that not enough people enjoy MLS.

(I mean, honestly, who cares about any of this? Who thefuck sees an ad on TV for something they don't enjoy and asks "what the hell is this?!" People who actively dislike a sport, at least one that doesn't involve...I don't know, gross barbarism, are sort of thoroughly insane. I realize that it's emblematic of a fear of foreign isht and commies and all that jazz, but it's still...not even angering, just motherfucking weird.)

20 minutes in, and I'm convinced that the vuvuzela is the sound you hear when you enter the gates of hell.

Geez, one game in, and to the very casual fan, it's a yawner.

Yes I'm sure it was a good game, but it would be great if there were less ties in this thing, to gather more support for soccer.

No, I'm not for PK or shootouts either. Ties are a necessary evil.

Then what exactly is your point?

the great thing about the ties is, if the final goes to penalty kicks, the serious fans always say:

"the (italians, the whoevers) won the Cup on penalty kicks." it is a different thing from really winning it.

(They really need to do away with penalty kicks in the semis onward, if not altogether. Ties are perfectly acceptable in group play.)

Sure. It's the equivalent of a free throw shooting contest, it's not necessarily a genuine reflection of the quality of either team. Not that it's all luck, as some like to suggest, but it's not the same as...well, "genuinely winning", yea.

This one has gone pretty much as expected. Uruguay play quite defensively, hoping to counter with three players, and France have been awful at breaking teams down for some time. So a goal is likely going to come from nothing, if it's going to come at all. It would have opened up quite a bit if Govou had taken that chance early on. I guess bringing Henry on might give them another player who can genuinely create, and maybe Gignac would give them another player to get into the box. Neither team would hate a draw here, though, so...I'm not really expecting either to go all out for the win, especially considering the history of both managers.

I'll be deep in the cold ground before I start rooting for these cheese-eating surrender monkeys, though. Go Uruguay.

It's not hard to see them scoring from somewhere, it's just hard to see where exactly that would be. Forlan and Suarez are both very dangerous when they get a chance, it's just hard to envision where the chance would come from. Probably a mistake in the back, which isn't particularly unlikely with a fairly vulnerable French back four.

I don't know if they really threaten France to any great degree from set pieces, which is typically a scenario where this sort of game could see a goal.

Hey, Suarez is one of the best strikers in FIFA 10. What gives?!

It's pretty funny that both announcers missed Lodeiro's first yellow.

Ties are awesome and will draw in many casual fans. Except the exact opposite.

is there any rhyme or reason to how much overtime there is? It's just a guess and we have no idea how long a match will go?

You hate ties, but you don't want them to do anything about them. Except maybe play better (or, more accurately, more unevenly).

Everybody hates ties. Everybody has been bitching about ties in soccer since Christ was a corporal. They come up with solution and people bitch about those, too. The "ties are boring" debate is already just as boring as ties themselves.

Also, I love you.

Eric or Drew can maybe correct me, but as far as I know, extra time is at the discretion of the officials and is intended to compensate for lost time due to injuries, substitutions, cards, etc.

It's meant to correlate with how many stoppages in play there were. Three minutes is pretty typical. Four minutes is sort of a lot. Five is pretty rare. Anything else is reserved for pretty bizarre circumstances.

(the idea that they need to (or even should) actively attempt to draw in casual American fans who think ties are for pansies is silly.)

I didn't say I want them to not do anything, I don't think there is anything you can do that wouldn't compromise the game. I'm not knowledgeable enough to go beyond that really.

I would have no idea what people censored about, I'm 100% new to soccer.

Also, there is/was a big scandal about Manchester United getting extra stoppage time when they were tied or trailing at home.

that is a fair point, I suppose. When you say "they" I assume you mean internationally, when I'm thinking of soccer taking off here. Ties aren't for pansies, but we aren't really used to ties. NHL fans I suppose, but less frequently.

I mean, I guess ties are unfortunate. I wouldn't even go so far as to say they are bad, as there are situations where neither team did anything to lose (or, as we saw today, to win)...and so neither necessarily should. They increased the point value of wins from two to three in order to decrease the incentive (relative to points available) for teams attempting to actively shut up shop in order to go home with something, but that doesn't mean it still won't happen.

Given the fact that soccer is the #1 sport in terms of audience and participation in the world I think the basic sentiment regarding North America is "Who cares ?" .

The game is just never going to be anything more than a fringe sport in North America and the rest of the world is fine with that.

When my Euro relatives watch an NFL game though, the comment always comes up on the lines of:

"Why in the fuck do you call this game football when they only kick the ball a dozen times a game ?"
