So the french did a good job of reminding the world why we hate them.June 20, 2010 at 06:04PM View BBCode
Couldn't they have some sort of "golden goal" overtime period, roughly the equivalent of U.S. Football's sudden-death OT? That would make more sense than PK's, yes?Originally posted by Tyles
(They just really, really need to do away with penalty kicks. Not as if that needs to be said, but still.)

look, you put in like a 15 minute overtime period where any goal wins, and maybe for shits and giggles you only allow for some specified number of players in the backfield at any given time.June 20, 2010 at 07:31PM View BBCode
Tom, why don't you break down some more advancement scenarios for us?June 20, 2010 at 10:28PM View BBCode
The only thing I could ever see happening would involve added (maybe even unlimited) substitutions after ninety minutes, and even that's pretty unlikely. Penalties aren't nice, but they're going to continue being a thing, as the implications of any potential changes beyond individual matches would cause points of contention from multiple sides.June 20, 2010 at 10:36PM View BBCode
(Of course, I hope at some point the masses get mad enough at penalties during the World Cup that FIFA are able to convince people to go along with a new system in exchange for concessions in another area, but I don't see it ever happening.)June 21, 2010 at 02:41AM View BBCode
That was pretty funny, mostly because even Drogba was trying to commiserate with Kaka, on some "yea, that was some isht" type thing. Then Kaka kept attempting to plead his case to Drogba, and Didier was all "alright man, I don't speak Portuguese, but whatever". Or something, I don't really know.June 21, 2010 at 03:21AM View BBCode

Of course, in the end it won't hurt Brazil at all, and it may have hurt CIV, because they'll likely need Portugal to lose that last match to have any chance at advancing (although I'd love for DPRK to get a result against the Portuguese).

Well that game should satisfy those people who complain about a lack of goal scoring at the World Cup .June 21, 2010 at 02:21PM View BBCode
A heroic 1-0 defeat that was called off at halftime due to terrorist threats from imperialist Americans who couldn't stand the idea that the DPRK was about to defeat one of their European stooges.June 21, 2010 at 02:57PM View BBCode
so, does it retroactively look really bad that brazil only beat them by 1?June 21, 2010 at 03:01PM View BBCode
No offense, but everything about that question makes my skin crawl. That's some Peter King-level shit right there.June 21, 2010 at 03:13PM View BBCode
(If you aren't already, you should really be reading his dispatches from Johannesburg. "The local beer here is really watery. Thank god for Peroni!")June 21, 2010 at 03:16PM View BBCode
I just read the first section of "Postcard from Johannesburg" and oh my God.June 21, 2010 at 03:32PM View BBCode
I am so glad you mentioned this. It is so perfectly Peter King-y, the half-assed conventional wisdom disguised as insights, the constant need to remind you of how important he is to the story, and then since it's the World Cup, a nice extra side dish of racism and imperialist condescension.June 21, 2010 at 03:37PM View BBCode
I hadn't even seed the postcard from Johannesburg. How did "four wafer-thin Namibians in miniskirts" get past an editor? (Answer: They turned sideways LOLZ.)June 21, 2010 at 03:42PM View BBCode
The whole thing could really benefit from the FJM treatment but since I don't have the time or the patience, I'll just do the last bullet point from his latest column:Pretty strange to come halfway across the world to be in the best health club you've ever seen, but that's the case with the Virgin Health Club in our neighborhood here.
