Tremendous game, Miller is an absolute stud .
Crosby was decidedly mediocre all day but all anyone will remember is the goal, the great ones just do that sh
it.

ok, some Q's from a novice fan:
a) is Crosby the difference? were he on the USA team, would they have won?
b) is Miller that good? is he the best goalie in the NHL?
c) is this indicative of the USA becoming better and closing the gap between them and Canada?
d) is euro hockey closing the gap?
e) was this bigger than the Stanley Cup for Canadian players?
f) when will hockey allow black folks to play?
g) what impact does this have on the NHL, short and long term?
h) can cherry and vitale get married in canada?

a) No and Maybe
b) Yes he's that good . He's certainly on the short list .
c) US hockey has been very good since the mid 80s, you just don't know this because the game is a fringe sport in America .
This current team is the new wave after the really great Americans of the 80s and 90s have packed it in, guys like Chelios, Housley, Modano, Leetch, Amonte, Richter et al who lost in Salt Lake .
Are they "closing the gap" ?
Tough question the best 23 American players, like Sweden, Russia, Finland and maybe the Czech Republic are "on any given day" going to give Canada's best 23 a run for it, the real difference is in oh #24-#100 . Much like basketball in the US I firmly believe that Canada 2 and possibly Canada 3 could've won medals .
d) see c
e) Tough call but I think No.
f) they do, google Ray Emery, Evander Kane, Mike Grier, Jarome Iginla, Kyle Okposo and Johnny Oduya for some examples .
g) not much short term, maybe some kids in the US start to play because they saw it on the Olympics. Long term it could get messy if the league decides not to support Hockey in 2014 in Russia .
h) legally yes but I don't think either of them are gay

Hockey is an expensive sport to pick up. It's always been known as a rich white kid sport where i'm from. It can run you near $500-800 min(for all new gear). Problem is young black kids can't afford this and instead will play basketball where all you need are shoes, ball, and a hoop. And second there are no role models that black kids can identify with in hockey.
That's why what Tiger had done for golf was so revolutionary to the game. Opens a lot of windows.

it was a joke Q. but now that you've allowed us a peek into your revolutionary views into the black community...
all black kids are po'? I thought they could scrape together hundreds down on the corner dealin dope.
lee elder didn't kick those doors down? eldrick has made it possible for po' black folk to play golf? he's magic...
football is 'spensive, too. I guess that's why young black don't play that, either. they just go down to the 'hood playground, steal some shoes on the way, find a ball and a peach basket, and have at it.
I'm enlightened, now. thanx.

Black kids don't start playing football until high school, only white kids play youth football, c'mon you know that. In high school football equipment is free so all you got to do is buy your cup and cleats.

you seem like a decent guy, so I'll give you the benefit by thinking maybe you live in a very small town in south dakota or something.
black kids in Houston play little league football starting about 5 yrs old. there are leagues all over the place, with thousands of kids of all nationalities and cultural backgrounds and skin colors participating. little league baseball is the same mix of every conceivable swath of humanity. we even let the black parents coach and umpire. it's a beautiful thing.
you should leave the 1950's and visit this brave new world we inhabit some time.

(Yeah, that's pretty stupid. Black people don't play hockey because cold weather kills them instantly the way the sun kills vampires, just like black people don't swim because they're not buoyant.)

watch carefully, and you'll see lil black chillrens outrunning lil white ones:

cuz, you know, blacks are faster than whites, especially in athletic gear they can't afford.

I was born and raised in Chi-town, have lived in New Orleans(I was there for Katrina), and now live in Los Angeles, but South Dakota would definitely be my next destination, always wanted to live on a ranch.
I don't want to argue this anymore, maybe cause i'm wrong, maybe cause i'm tired. Therefore I've decided just to throw my arms in the air and say you win.
Shep you've subdued me via exhaustion.

Ha.
I always wonder whether, if I was a casual observer, I would side with Crosby and dislike Ovechkin. I've never been a big fan of look-at-me type athletes. But then I remember that I dislike passive-aggressive little douchnozzles even more, so that seals it.

as someone from outside that rivalry, i can honestly say i enjoy watching both of them. even more so when they're playing against each other.

They're 1 and 1A .
I think Ovechkin has more raw talent and if I was starting a franchise and could take any player first it would probably be Ovechkin but Crosby is a magnificent talent, and I certainly wouldn't be upset with him as a consolation prize.
The other thing is that it's difficult to grasp what it must have been like growing up as Crosby. I mean he's been "the next one" since he was about 15 and that's gotta be tough .
I'm not at all certain what sort of pressure there was on Ovechkin to succeed as a teenager but I do know that at 22 Crosby now has an Olympic Gold medal, a Stanley Cup ring and not many phenoms acheive that kind of success early .
