You know, I thought about mentioning it earlier, but I didn't bother because it seemed absurd. All the same, if Serbia equalize and their match ends 2-2 and Germany-Ghana holds at 1-0, Serbia would jump over Ghana into second on goals scored.

(And if all of those teams knew what was good for them they'd all pack it in right now and just go home because better that than having to face Brazil which is the only team in the world that actually knows how to play soccer and also asses.)

I have to say, it's nice that ESPN not only lets you watch the games online but lets you watch multiple games at the same time.So, Ghana. Eriq, what do we think?

Well. I think Ghana's probably a better match-up than Serbia, but they do seem pretty well organized and they have quality all over the field. In terms of attack, they often look dangerous but not necessarily lethal, and I'm sure they'll make our defending look awful on multiple occasions...it's just a question of whether they can capitalize, if Howard can have a big game, all that. They play a pretty high line defensively, and I could see our pacy attackers taking advantage of that. I don't know. I would have been thrilled if I was offered this before the tournament, and outside of meeting Australia it's the best we could have hoped for.

At the time of this writing it is 23:15 JT (Johannesburg Time) as I file this report from the lounge of the Grand Hotel Johannesburg (it is no Comfort Suites, but they have free wifi; the coffee stinks) on my MacBook Air. Three USA fans, the Stars and Stripes slathered on their faces, the paint beginning to fade and run, like foam down the side of a double tall nonfat chai latte with a pump of hazelnut from Starbucks lead the chant: "We want Ghana!" Across the lobby, a rail-thin Ethiopian, his face a glittering mosaic of Zulu warpaint and more piercings than you'll see at a Green Day concert, shoots them a bushman's stare and clucks something in his native tongue. THIS IS THE WORLD CUP.

So are the Slovaks trying to outdive the Italians today or is that just coincidental?

(I haven't seen a lot of Slovak diving, but I have seen some aggressive fouls by Italy.)

No no no, if my people beat Italy we are asking that the New Zealand-Paraguay result holds. It is Paraguay and Slovakia through to the knockout round, or you suffer Italy.
