Theodore's gone after this year, he's a UFA I believe.

The Caps are loaded at goalie, check out Holtby and Neuvirth's AHL stats some time. I really thought they would make a play for Vokuon given that number of good young goalies they had to offer Florida .

at some point you'd expect the GM to trade for/sign a real goaltender, actually. marty turco, maybe?

I'd be perfectly happy with the Caps just turning the reigns over to Varlamov. Sign some cheap veteran to be his backup. It seems weird that they keep entrusting their playoff lives to him, when what he really needs is on-the-job training in the regular season.

I'll say the same for Masshole teams; ergo, go Sabers.

the bruins are hardly in the same class as the pats, sox and celts.

Which doesn't mean, at all, that Massholes don't root for them.

(I don't root for New York teams, either. This is kind of a thing.)

OK, so my bad. Least it was a Slovak.

(I mean, arguably my favorite player in the NHL plays for the Bruins, so it's not like I have some unilateral hatred for them. Just for Massholes.)

chara?

(i have no affection for the massholes either, just the bruins)

Yeah, Chara. He grew up in Trencin, Slovakia, which is basically my adopted home in Eastern Europe. All of my Slovak buddies have been out drinking with him.

Fuck. One more round. Your boy owned tonight, even though you don't like him.

I was going to say I'd like to revise my statement from "terrible" to "wildly inconsistent."

That Chi-Nash was the most fun game I've seen in a long time. I hope Hossa doesn't get suspended, I mean he has no priors as Ovechkin did and his hit wasn't even close to as violent as Wisniewski's was. So we'll see.

God, sports tribalism makes me nauseous.

OK, hockey nuts, 'splain me why Hossa deserves a spension (as Melrose asserts).

I did not see his hit as being anywhere close to Ovey's. Ovey got into his guy and really gave him a shove, Hossa appears to barely push his guy.

Is it merely the hitting from behind that close to the boards?

(I have no dog in this fight, just seeking info)

Pretty much.

The hit started just above the red line and the Nashville player's back was turned . This one will be an interesting test for Colin Campbell given that Hamhuis wasn't badly injured and Hossa has a clean sheet, at least I don't recall any previous incidents.

One difference, in my mind, is that unlike the Ovechkin/Campbell hit it appears that Hamhuis is still playing the puck when Hossa hits him but it's still a dangerous play .

Now, this coming from a huge Blackhawks fan, I'd say fine him and maybe a 1-game suspension. The hit wasn't really that bad, it was just in an unlucky place. Ovechkin's hit was a lot more malicious, Hossa's was a push (not at all at full strength), Ovechkin had a full on-shove (cocks both arms back and gets full extension). Hossa gets a 1-game suspension, the Hawks are still deep enough to win the series against Nashville, everyone's happy.

Also, what has to be kept in mind is how physical Nashville has been this series, quite a few times the physical is closer to dirty than "playing hard". So that may be enough to keep it to a fine and a poor image to Hossa for the remaining 11 years of his contract.

It's still a great contract you get him for his prime years and then pay out $7.5 million total for the last 5 years meanwhile you save roughly $15.5 million of cap space through 2016-17 .

I thought only the NBA had weird rules like that.

The Sharks must have figured something out to win the last two going away, although, other than not skating to the puck and otherwise not showing any initiative at all, the first four games could have gone either way.

The Chi/Nsh game yesterday hurts them the most. The Preds are done, and if they had won, they would have faced SJ in the semifinals, and what little success this Sharks team has had in the playoffs is almost exclusively because of Nashville. But Game 5 really hurt them. I still can't believe they lost that game, but I had the impression if they did not score on the power play that it was going to be over -- I just didn't think it would be that fast.

Of course, my team blew a 5-1 lead after two to lose 7-6 in OT last night. I'd never experienced anything like that before.

"NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell conducted a hearing with Hossa on Sunday and decided that no further penalty would be assessed. Hossa was spared, in part, because he is not a repeat offender."

on the money

Yeah, I didn't think the two hits I mentioned were anywhere near similar.

Ovey is the Brian Dawkins of the NHL. He may have achieved the coveted "Dirtiest Player Ever" award handed out by the shep whenever it's warranted.
