I promised a Bill Plaschke sound byte, and damnit, I don't want to disappoint.

You are viewing the raw post code; this allows you to copy a message with BBCode formatting intact.
Is there backstory here? Does Plaschke have some, like, long-standing vendetta against Manny? Or is this just ordinary, run-of-the-mill Plaschke lunacy?

Apparently, Plaschke never really cared for the acquisition of Manny Ramirez. I'll snoop around some BP archives... But as usual, no one listened to his stark raving whatev, and poof! Some of the most priceless audio you'll find on the web these days.

[url=http://articles.latimes.com/2008/sep/28/sports/sp-plaschke28]I stand corrected.[/url]

(I only do this because there's nothing else to do, well... the censored Cavs game... Jesus.)

So he said the trade was good, but the re-signing was going to be a bad idea. But as usual, I'm not going to concede any sort of vindication for the guy. Woody Paige could kick his ass, for god's sake.

some people used cocaine and didn't become crackheads

some smoke dope and live productive lives

some took the brown acid and didn't lose their minds

many more DID suffer at the hands of these drugs, so we educate people and criminalize the substances, in the name of protecting kids.

that's what they say this whole thing is truly about, protecting kids from the long term dangers of abusing steroids.

I applaud that.

I don't care what a grown man does to his body or how many homers he hits because he took them, unless the sacred shrine in cooperstown is besmirched, of course.

oh wait, the old timers committee already besmirched it.

never mind...

I have officially given up on giving a censored about steroids and, frankly, baseball generally. But any time Craig goes Futurama, I am in love.

The episode is "When Aliens Attack," ep 1-12. 1ACV12, if you want to be technical about it, and I do.

I had to go into rehab about a year ago when I began to have the DVD commentaries memorized. I haven't watched an episode in quite awhile. I haven't seen the last two movies yet, either. I thought the second one was stupid. Okay nerdlinger, shut up about Futurama.

The only legit reason for a male to use hcg is help in fertility.

Heightened testosterone + hcg + massive delay before signing contract = HUGE suspicion.

By which you mean, of course, that he can't accurately measure it against some baseline standard of performance that gives those numbers tangible and absolute meaning, because we CAN count, very easily, just how many times the ball went over the fence.

And I have been saying this for eons: The statistics were incomprehensible long before the steroid era. Different eras, different balls, bats, ballparks, training methods, etc. There's no rational way to compare these guys. I mean it really wouldn't be that hard to look at steroids as another training innovation and simply live with it, as we've come to live with batting gloves and shaved handles and everything else. The only reason the steroid mess even matters is that there's a public perception that it violates a trust between the players and the fans.

Which it does, because it does. There's no way around that. But the public health issue is, and should be, the only relevant perspective on this, and it is the least relevant. This notion that the game was somehow pristine before steroids is ludicrous, though not so much as thinking steroids makes judging players by their statistics significantly less pointless and impossible.

censored it. The HOF ballot should be like the All-Star ballot. It should COME with the All-Star ballot, and be just as relevant.

what makes comparisons significantly harder is when you can't even compare players in the SAME era because you don't know which half of the players was juicing and which half was not. Or even if half is the right number.

Is this even true. Does hcg help men in fertility? I thought it was just used to help women in fertility.

it seems (from what i can tell) to be strictly a female fertility drug (in pregnancy it helps sustain the fetus, before pregnancy i believe this says it can trigger ovulation). in men, it supposedly helps the body to produce testosterone naturally when said body stops having steroids fed to it. there is a little bit here about its controversial (or doubtful, whatever) useage as a weight loss adjunct.

perhaps manny saw this florida doctor and said doctor said manny's nuts were too small, and perhaps this might help them grow bigger. or perhaps manny wanted to ovulate, maybe he is actually a woman. a very ugly woman. marginally more ugly than fergie.

From your link:

In the male, hCG injections are used to stimulate the leydig cells to synthesize testosterone. The intratesticular testosterone is necessary for spermatogenesis from the sertoli cells. Typical uses for hCG in men include hypogonadism and fertility treatment.

Basically it makes the testes start kicking out testosterone, which is necessary for the testes to make sperm.

if this is what is was used for, I understand his concern about mentioning it to a team doctor.

However, Manny did also have abnormally high testosterone in his system, which wouldn't be apparent in 99% of fertility concern type cases.
