Either way, it doesnt matter, there is no question that the QB is the most important person on the field. But that is of course why they come with the biggest pricetag. The marginal difference between Favre and Clemens, and between Faneca and Revolving Door #1 (or whatever their old guard was called) are probably similar, because their old guard was THAT bad. there are other people on the team who are equally as terrible.
From Bill Barnwell (my favorite FO writer): "As we?ve discussed previously, the problem with the Jets last year wasn?t their quarterback. It was an offensive line that leaked pass rushers, a defensive line unable to stop the run, and a group of linebackers who didn?t fit the defense they played for. Will Favre be an upgrade on Pennington or Clemens? Sure. Will it be enough to make a huge difference, justify his salary and the displacement of another large salary, and the media swell that follows? No. Brett Favre can?t stop offensive linemen from setting up shop three yards in front of the line of scrimmage, he can?t get to Chad Henne, and unless he?s really been working on his jumping ability, he can?t stop Randy Moss. And that?s what the Jets need. Getting Favre isn?t going to hurt them, but it?s not a magic tonic by any means."
Yet again, I cant stress this enough...Packers last season:
Lowest adjusted sacks allowed.
Highest Yards after Catch.
Relied largely on slant routes
QB is always a major factor in any passing statistic, including YAC and adjusted sacks allowed, but its pretty clearly indicative of a good scheme, and good players around him that most likely boosted his stats significantly. I mean, unless you think Favre is the most mobile QB in the NFL, and is the most major reason for the adjusted sack rate.
Also, dirtdevil, arent you canadian? Pfft...Canadians dont know about football.

In response to the "keeping the defense off the field", I havent seen any article about whether or not "keeping the defense off the field" actually has a positive effect on the defense. (remember, the opposing offense is getting rested too), I would assume that it most likely does. But im curious as to how much. Anyone seen an article about this? Oh, also, using the extremely liberal approach to QB influencing everything, all of the players who play on offense and defense affect every single play in the game.

Still, it's painfully obvious that QB is the most important single position in any professional team sport. This cannot be stated more simply.
Will Faneca make a bigger difference than Favre? I don't know. I do know that the combination of the 2 moves will vastly improve the Jet offense. Faneca was an integral part of a Steelers O-line that enabled Willie Parker to be among the league's rushing leaders the past few seasons. He's a very good lineman.
I suppose that you and I will just have to agree to disagree about FO. I do my own analysis and it has served me well. Most of the time, they seem consumed with circular reasoning and arguments that are impossible to prove.

I agree, QB is very important. but Clemens wasnt terrible, nor was Pennington.
I dont think FO is great. its not even close to as good as BP, thats for sure. (but BP had a 25 year head start, and baseball is easier to analyze) I think Barnewll is awesome, and Shultz and Tanier are generally decently good. Michael whatever his middle name is Smith really annoys me and doesnt know what he is talking about.

haha. The curse. Ray Lewis avoided the curse. All the other players were either overrated players (generally speed QBs), injury prone, or players due for a decline (like curse of 370 players and such). Faulk being the most major exception. Note, ME told me that, i havent actually done my own analysis.
