Most arb year buyouts cover a year of free agency...maybe two, so that the two sides don't have to go through that painful process every season. It is rare that a contract covers two arb seasons and a five year extension.January 14, 2010 at 07:57PM View BBCode

My reference was anecdotal, as I find the "business" of baseball extremely interesting and tend to follow it. In searching, [url=http://www.bizofbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3222:youth-is-king-lets-wrap-up-them-up-through-arbitration&catid=26:editorials&Itemid=39]here[/url] is an article discussing recent arb buyouts early in players careers, that wind up covering a couple of seasons of free agency. Many teams ask players to give up a year or two of hitting the open market, in exchange for a significant raise up front, salary certaintly, and avoiding the negative approach teams have to take when fighting arbitration cases.January 27, 2010 at 09:30PM View BBCode
By the way Bryan, I concede the point. The Mets are certainly not contenders on paper, unless the current players significantly outperform expectations as a whole...or they make an unexpected trade (or two) for significant talent.January 28, 2010 at 10:45PM View BBCode
The Twins are apparently making no head way in extending "Hometown Joe" and current free market estimates are in the eight year $200 million range.March 21, 2010 at 11:01PM View BBCode

Besides, Mauer's got his dream job, he will give a huge hometown discount to play for Minnesota. I'm thinking they'll do something ridiculous like 7 years, 89 million or so to keep him.
If they get Mauer for 7 years for $89 million it would be the singular best bargain in recent MLB history.
I cannot imagine Mauer signing anything worth less than $20 million per season on the open market so even a 25% "hometown discount" would put 7 years at $105.

I think it is conceivable. I think it is more likely he is offered eight years for $240 million, and the Twins get him for 7 years for $140 million.

Yeah Joe sure gave Minnesota a huge hometown discount to stay with his dream job didn't he .March 22, 2010 at 02:42AM View BBCode
I bet they trade him now that they have that salary locked in (I didn't read if there's a no trade clause).March 22, 2010 at 02:48AM View BBCode
7 years, $140 million isn't terribly far off the mark. 7 years, $89 million is typical off-brand, MFCS cubfan.March 22, 2010 at 04:36AM View BBCode

Is it realistic that Minysoda can afford that?
