How in the world did this innocent little "Mock the RedSox front office" thread turn into a bitchfest about the Mets ?[Edited on 1-14-2010 by tworoosters]

Of course, a player such as Pujols is more than rare, so what the Cards did was smart. But the contract was more of an extension to lock him up long term than it was a simple buyout of his arb years.

Most arb year buyouts cover a year of free agency...maybe two, so that the two sides don't have to go through that painful process every season. It is rare that a contract covers two arb seasons and a five year extension.Of course, a player such as Pujols is more than rare, so what the Cards did was smart. My reference was anecdotal, as I find the "business" of baseball extremely interesting and tend to follow it. In searching, [url=http://www.bizofbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3222:youth-is-king-lets-wrap-up-them-up-through-arbitration&catid=26:editorials&Itemid=39]here[/url] is an article discussing recent arb buyouts early in players careers, that wind up covering a couple of seasons of free agency. Many teams ask players to give up a year or two of hitting the open market, in exchange for a significant raise up front, salary certaintly, and avoiding the negative approach teams have to take when fighting arbitration cases.

By the way Bryan, I concede the point. The Mets are certainly not contenders on paper, unless the current players significantly outperform expectations as a whole...or they make an unexpected trade (or two) for significant talent.

Can't really see that 7 year $89 million pipe dream proposed on page one of this thread happening. At this rate even with a 25% hometown discount Mauer is going to cost in the neighborhood of $20 million per year.

The Twins are apparently making no head way in extending "Hometown Joe" and current free market estimates are in the eight year $200 million range.Can't really see that 7 year $89 million pipe dream proposed on page one of this thread happening. $23 million per year for eight years is a fuckton of money for a catcher given the physical demands of the position but he's certainly the best one around .

7 years, $140 million isn't terribly far off the mark. 7 years, $89 million is typical off-brand, MFCS cubfan.

There is a no-trade clause, and Mauer will have 10/5 rights by the time the contract is done. He's a Twin for life.
