I think almost all the MLS teams have an academy now. I know the Galaxy do, and they have rubbed a lot of local high school coaches the wrong way by not letting the kids they have play high school soccer. In fact, my high school coach just quit after like 20 years of coaching and I think it was about 80% because two of his best players got swooped by the Galaxy Academy.

It was a tough game to keep control of, as Holland's strategy focused around kicking the hell out of the Spanish in order to prevent there from being much of a flow (so both sides were always going to get upset about everything), but Webb certainly could have done much better. I'd have liked for the Japanese dude (who was apparently the fourth official) to have gotten the final, although that might have allowed Van Bommel to kill Xavi.July 12, 2010 at 04:33AM View BBCode
I didn't think Webb did too bad a job, really. His choices were either send someone off early and put a huge stamp on the game, or try to just give everyone a little bit of leeway and hope it never really goes too far. Webb picked the first option, and the only times it really boiled over was the De Jong challenge, and the one where Van Bommel came in late on Iniesta (again) and Iniesta (understandably) bumped him back in retaliation.July 12, 2010 at 04:40AM View BBCode
And the balance of cards against the Netherlands bears that out. Webb set the stage early with that string of cards beginning in the 16th minute -- he was issuing them correctly, but in order to be consistent it was obvious he was going to be taking the card out of his pocket a lot. I don't think he misused the yellow card, despite the fact that he more than doubled the previous record of yellow cards issued in a World Cup final (14 v. 6, and we were rooting for him to put his own record out of reach once he hit about 9). I thought he let them get away with quite a bit (there were a ton of cards, obviously, but it was impossible for there not to be). I guess that was always going to happen with an English referee, but like I said, he was put in a very difficult position. Only one person got sent off (although none of De Jong, Van Bommel, or Puyol would have been able to complain much had they been sent off as well), and nobody got injured too badly, and I think that is about as good as we could have hoped for from a ref in that game.July 12, 2010 at 04:55AM View BBCode

Like I said, he was pretty evenhanded all things considered, and it is just short of a cosmic achievement that only one player was sent off out of those 14 cards issued. Anyway, maybe "disaster" was a bit harsh. Well, I mean, the ref can't give Robben the one-on-one with the keeper, watch Robben botch it, and then give the free kick. That is not how an advantage call works. But he probably could have given Puyol a second yellow once play finally stopped. If anything, Robben's (unsurprisingly) childish reaction made Webb decide, 'eh, screw these pricks'.
