That might be the safest prediction re: said event that I've ever heard. And some people don't think Canadians understand the subtleties of the sport ...

Quarterbacks fighting diseases from the heart of Appalachia? That's so 80's, bro. It's all about the Gulf Coast in the aughts. Should read something like:

Eddie George kind of looks half-soul half-Chinese, like Hines Ward or Kima Greggs.

Clearly, we have moved off the intended subject and I will not try and force us back on track. But since I did start the thread (and then forgot about it) I'd like to throw in my two cents...
The centerpiece of Happy's argument (other than Brett Farve is the 32nd best QB in the league) seems to be that the Jets were lacking in so many other areas last season that Favre's addition will not solve those problems. To that end he is correct. However, he has ignored the OTHER moves that they have made this offseason. The areas of deficiency that he has pointed out have been the pass rush, run defense, O-Line/blocking, and corner. Areas the Jets have addressed this offseason: pash rush (Calvin Pace, Vernon Gholston), run defense (Kris Jenkins), O-line/blocking (Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Bubba Franks as the blocking tight end, Tony Richardson). The only position on that list that they didn't address was CB unless you believe that Ahmad Carroll and rookie Dwight Lowery are the answer there. But in all, they have upgraded every weakness that Happy listed.
Now, I'm not saying that Pace won't turn back into a pumpkin this year, Gholston will pan out, Woody will return to the form he showed with the Patriots, Jenkins won't balloon to 500 pounds and land on IR, etc. It's possible that some or all of those moves won't pan out, but they are still upgrades over what was currently there. And we can't forget about what Favre's presence will do for the offense.
At one time Chad Pennington was a pretty decent quarterback. He never had the strongest arm, but he was accurate and made smart decisions. Then he tore his rotator cuff in his throwing arm... twice... And ever since then he's been throwing wiffle balls that can barely flutter 10 yards down field without bouncing. Defenses could clog the box with 9 men effectively shutting down the running game and cutting off the short passing lanes because they knew that even if a receiver was left wide open down field Pennington could not get the ball to him.
I forget the exact number, but the Jets lost a handful of games last year by 7 points or less. I think the number was 8. That's the difference between 4-12 and 12-4. I'm not saying the Jets will win the Super Bowl or have the best record this season or any of that, but they are certainly a much better team than they were last year.

and 3 of the Jets wins were by 3 points, so that is how close they were to 1-15

What Favre allows them to do is back off the defense because he DOES have the arm to throw it 50 yards downfield. It may be inaccurate, but Pennington could never hope to get the ball that far. Favre's arm strength immediately improves the passing game and running game, whether the WRs are catching those deep balls or not.

Skier~Jets were expecing a bounceback season this season anyway, there is no question they were unlucky, there is no question they have improved. Ghoulston is a rookie, he will not save the D line.
O line has solidified, there is no question there. Their entire pass defense is really a mess. CBs, linebackers who dont fit the system, pass rush, etc etc.
Jets have made some good moves. I thought the faneca move wasnt enough to put them over the top, and thought it was dumb at the time. Maybe Favre is enough. My point is that he isnt AS MUCH of an upgrade as people believe. (top 5...lol)
I guess my overall summary is that I agree with most of what you said.

The Jets play a 3-4 scheme therefore Gholston will be playing OLB, not D-line. My point was that the additions of Gholston as an OLB on the one side and Calvin Pace who thrived when the Cardinals switched over to the 3-4 last season. I'm not saying that Gholston will be a beast automatically or that Pace won't regress, but I'm saying they have a chance to improve the pass rush and are clear upgrades over Barton and Hobson on the outside who were 4-3 linebackers that were in no way suited to play OLB in the 3-4.
As far as their D-line goes I actually think they're pretty good here. Jenkins replaces Robertson who was a horrible fit for the 3-4 and is a monster space eater in the middle. Kenyon Coleman was actually pretty good last year as a run-stuffer from the end. He led all D-linemen in tackles last season. Ellis is probably still better suited to play in a 4-3, but he does have a big frame so he may be able to adapt because of the upgrades around him.
As far as the receivers go... I think they will have big years with the new QB. Cotchery caught 83 balls for over 1100 yards last season with the Pennington/Clemens tandem. Coles was limited to only 10 starts last season due to injuries. My point in all this is, time after time Pennington was hanging these guys out to dry as his passes floated and fluttered leaving the receivers victims of big hits time after time. Favre's extra zip should not only improve their YAC, but also save them from being blindsided by safeties and linebackers time after time.
