I watched the game in a brew pub on the Oregon coast. What a bizarre epilogue to Zidane's career. Ultimately I was happy with Italy's victory in light of the head-butt and France's early P.K., which was absolutely rot. There was little to no contact and should have ruled a yellow the other direction, but the Italians made it right in the end. I agree, though, that penalty kicks are a poor way to decide a championship. It makes as much sense as replacing extra innings with a home run derby, or deciding Game 7 OT on a 3-point shootout.

The problem is, the players can barely move by the end of the 30 minute overtime, as you could see in the final. The game has to end in some way at that point, and unfortunately it can't be with further play.
Starting neutral, I too was swayed into rooting for Italy by the embarrassing penalty kick decision early in the game. We were very loud on the corner kick goal and Buffon's absurd save on the Zidane header in OT. After the headbutting you really had to root for Italy, because, as we breathlessly speculatated in the dying minutes of the game, what would have happened if France had won? Could he have come back on for the celebration? The headbutt would be even more tarnishing had France won.
Oh, and Folifan, if you still read this thread, fuck you.

I simply don't agree with you. Take two 5-minute overtimes following the 30 minutes, and drop down to 8-on-8, allowing each team to take its three most exhausted players. Someone is bound to score. Or give each team two additional subs at the beginning of OT. Or take the penalty kicks from the top of the box instead of the PK spot to give the keeper a better chance at making a save. Or go with whichever team had more shots on goal. The system as it stands is just terrible.

My buddy called me up when there was 5 minutes of OT remaining, so I decided to turn on the game, enticed by PK's.
Sure enough, after the 3 penalty kicks I saw, my cable went out, both in the family room and bedroom.
Apparently God was strong enough to correct my lapse in judgement. Thou shalt not watch soccer.

Haha.
I've heard suggestions for unlimited substitutions during the intermissions (to not disturb the flow of the game) of extra time periods and for re-entry to be allowed during extra time. It would probably have to be golden goal throughout extra time, or at least after the first two 15 minute periods.
Anyway, the Scottish Premier League season (which I really don't care about, but its the first season that starts) starts July 29th and Newcastle United has a Intertoto game Saturday morning, which is a qualifier for the UEFA Cup. Looking forward to hopefully watching those. And the premiership starts August 19th with Liverpool-Sheffield United at 6:45 Central.

I think it's badass. Never thought a frenchman would have it in him.
But he's from Africa or some shit, so I suppose he's not a true frenchy

Other than Zidane's headbutt, the final was mostly anticlimatic. Lots of flopping and diving, no offense whatsoever from Italy, and ending on penalty kicks. I hate penalty kicks; it's like deciding the NBA Finals on a game of horse...

Funny, PKs are the only thing that I find remotely interesting.
That's the difference between a fan and someone who doesn't give a shit

I'm glad it's over. Now we can get back to watching the domino tournaments.

Maybe a game of dominos for the tiebreak would be better than penalty kicks.

I'm watching a Danish match now. Iggy, your people suck less than I thought. Brondby (I don't know how to do the cross O thing) against Vejle. 1-0 Vejle right now.

Quit with the soccer jip. The World Cup was very poor but watch some games in the English Premiership and they're considerably more exciting. Follow the mighty Latics all the way!!
