MLB- Countdown to history; Best World Series teams (yeah, i'm ripping off a title)

That one about football had me going. Baseball has a longer history with many more moments.

ESPN, I think has not ranked the best world series teams just teams, but we do have that "Who's number 1" dealing with that, but it was biased; how did the 52 Yankees make that cut? Here's the only criteria for this one; name five teams from one year, not period like the 1929-31 A's, too easy. Here's my top five...

1. 1998 Yankees (Again, there's the 27 edition, but everyone always pick them, and this team went through everybody with 125 wins; season/postseason. The padres was simply a foil)

2.1970 Orioles (In 66, they shutout Koufax and the Dodgers. Robinson's glove work can't be explanined in words, along with their pitching and power)

3. 1989 A's (What made the A's great over this period just like between 72-74 is the talent. Only difference here is this group won one title over an overmatched Giant team.)

4. 1905 New York Giants (Mathewson's 3 shutouts against the A's will probably never be repeated)

5. 2004 Red Sox ( After the Yankees, they were unstoppable against the Cards; it was the momenteum.)

Notatables: 64 Cards, 71 Pirates, 93 Bluejays, 55 Dodgers, 68 Tigers. On a side note, baseball produced many great world series teams; the problem is there are simply too many to choose from

Absolutely no credibility after that one. Here are the problems with the Red Sox, feel good story though they may have been to finally "break the curse" which was, incidentally invented during the 1980s. 1) The club didn't win 100 games. 2) The club didn't have the best record in the league 3) The club didn't have the best record in the division 4) they did not cruise through the playoffs 5) if you want to say they blew away the Cardinals and that makes them a great WS team, OK you can make that argument but you'd probably have to put the team behind every team that swept their opponant.
Under absolutely no criteria did this team make the top 5, top 10 or probably even the top 20.

1. 1961 Yankees, Maris, Mantle, Ford et al in 5 over the Reds. How you can name great baseball champions and not pick a representative from the 1949-64 era Yankees teams is beyond me.

2. 1976 Reds. I think the '75 version of the big red machine was a little better (108 wins vs. 102) and both swept Philly in the NLCS but the '75 team had a classic 7 game series with the Red Sox while the '76 team swept the Yankees.

3. 1927 Yankees. Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Combs, Meusel and the rest of the team totally dominated the AL and then the Pirates in four. You can argue that the 1998 team won four more games but they also played in 8 more so essentially went 4-4 in the extra games.

4. 1909 Pirates. 110-42 in the regular season and held on to beat the Ty Cobb led Tigers in seven

5. 1907 Cubs. Again the '06 team might have been better but they were upset by the hitless wonders from across town in the WS so can't really qualify here.

Ok, here is how I feel about the Yankees and will leave it there for once... Yeah, from 49-64 they were "Baseball's team" in terms of winning and everything else; that's the thing, winning. I didn't just forget them, I'm just tired of hearing about them and knew that someone would name one of those teams on their list. To name one to settle this, I'm going with the 61 Yanks, their last great team until 78; Mantle, Maris, Berra, Howard for offense, enough said. Ford came through as usual . On the subject of these "great teams" from 49-64, the Dodgers went the distance with them every time they played; in 49 they narrowly beat Boston. Point being, they didn't truly dominate in that sense (with the exception of Phils in 50 and Reds in 60) since they were taken to the distance many times. Again, this goes back to the point that there are so many teams to choose from; the teams I had were the first that came to mind, sorry.;)
