Best HR hitter of all-time

January 28, 2008 at 02:59AM View BBCode

Me and my friend were having the debate of the best home run hitter of all-time. Keeping everything in mind from the competition of the eras to the overall number. My personal vote is Babe Ruth because he hit the most Home runs per at bat (other than McGwire). Put your vote here and back it up with some stats.

Babe Ruth is the best home run hitter of all time because he had the least at bats per home run (11.8). Also during this time baseball was played the small ball way. When Babe Ruth hit 54 homers in 1920 the second most in MLB was Goerge Sisler with 19. The Babe hit more hmers than team themselves and revolutionized the game. Hank Aaron broke Ruth's homer record with over 2,000 more at bats, and we all know how Bonds broke Ruth's record. Also it must be remembered that when Ruth hit 60 that year in 1927 that record still stands when the season was played with 150+ games. Maris broke that record by 1 playing in 10 more games than Ruth did. In my mind George Herman Ruth is the best HR hitter of all time.

Joe DiMaggio

361 Hr's
369 KO's

In 1948 he hit 39 Hr's and struck out 30 times.

1937 he hit 46 HR's and struck out 37 times.

1939 He hit 30 Hr's, struck out 20 times and hit .381.

He belongs in the poll.

Nothing more to say. Babe is the man. He changed the way the game was played.

True DiMaggio missed time for the war my bad, but you can write in as allows

I'm not sure what not striking out has to do with being a great home run hitter.

Babe Ruth is the best home run hitter of all time because he had the least at bats per home run (11.8).

Wrong, McGwire's number is lower. And he played against the darkies.

Who cares how many more ABs it took Aaron, he did it against the best competition. Ruth only played with the crackers. Obviously everyone on the list is a great HR hitter except Sosa but only because of that stupid ass kiss his fingers crap that really annoyed me. I don't think that this question can ever be answered as a whole, it has to be a who was the greatest of their generation.

Hank Aaron, as Tyler would say, made a fuckton of outs.

Why does it matter what race a player played against there goes the purity of my poll. Also Ruth shouldnt be punished for playing before integration. Also name 5 Hall of Famers who were black pitchers that played in the MLB. The answer will suprise you the color difference would have not mattered at all.

Babe, he dominated the game. What was the single season record before him, 27?

This is exactly the point - there are, indeed, black pitchers that are Hall of Famers, many of whom never got a chance to play against white competition.

Satchel Paige, Ray Brown, Andy Cooper, Leon Day, Bill Foster, Jose Mendez, Bullet Joe Rogan, Hilton Smith, Smokey Joe Williams. The Babe didn't face any of these pitchers in official competition.

Ruth also played in an era of doctored baseballs. When comparing players of different eras you have to weigh how much better a player was in his era than other players and I think no one can say Ruth was not far and away in front in this situation. True he did not have to face black pitchers but neither did the black pitchers have to face white players so since those were the rules then you can't just dismiss them or make up what would have happened(who knows he may have hit more homers with black players playing on his team-we will never know). Just as now we have to take into account the steroid and HGH driven numbers of recent years. If I remember correctly and was stated earlier in some years Ruth hit more homers than all of the players on some teams or finished so far ahead of 2nd place guy it was ridiculous.

Fergie Jenkins, Bob Gibson, Juan Marichal (not technically NEGRO, but would have been kept out of baseball because he looked it), Luis Tiant should be a HOF, Mariano Rivera will be a HOF'er, that's just off the top of my head of great pitchers who would not have been allowed to play before the color line was broken.

Babe played against the people who took the mound in his time. He didn't make the color line, and I don't think you can hold it against him because it existed. Trying to put our values on the generation of a hundred years ago is misguided, IMO.

Mark Twain used the N word in his books. Does that make him less of an author? It was a different time, with different dynamics at work. Look at the names from back then. Dummy was common for what we would call "mentally challenged", etc. I vote for Ruth, not because of stats, but because he FORCEFULLY changed the way the game was played FOREVER. I don't believe any one player has had the impact on baseball that he did. The only guy who came close was Jackie Robinson.

Josh Gibson was probably more powerful. Oscar Charleton was probably a better all around player. Who knows what Cobb's power #'s would have been, or Honus Wagner's?

That's my .02.

You can't hold Ruth accountable for the dingbats who did not allow blacks to play at the Major League level...All a ballplayer can do is play against the competition at the time and put forth the best effort possible...Ruth is #1 by far...I know we are talking purely Home Run hitters but name another power hitter who won 20 games in back to back seasons...Ruth accomplished this feat in 1916 and 1917...BTW, he won 18 games in 1915 too...For a player to display that kind of pitching and hitting ability makes him the greatest ballplayer of all time...

Let's not get carried away, though -- he did OBP .374, and played through the pitching-friendly mid-60s.

And the answer to the question, putting certain factors aside, is Barry Bonds. Now, if you want to discount his numbers, do the same with Ruth and give the mantle to ... A-Rod, who will almost certainly retire as the career leader (and in the Top 10 in [url=http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/ABpHR_career.shtml]at-bats per HR[/url].)

Bo Jackson played baseball and football. Surely, he's the greatest ballplayer of all-time. The second-best? Danny Ainge, of course.

(Ruth's pitching has nothing to do with his power hitting, just as -- tip to FJM -- Sammy Baugh's defensive play has nothing to do with quarterbacking).

Certain factors? I think you're mistaken. Of course Bonds lived a blameless life and everybody's happy that he's now the HR king. Except for that one time he forgot to tip his waitress, but let's not split hairs here.

I hated it for a while too, but now I love it again. It looks like victory, of the sort that my Redskins could not achieve against your Seahawks but of the sort that I, personally, can achieve over you with an avatar that says, "I am amused by the comedy stylings of Gallagher".
