New Cross Links

February 21, 2008 at 10:59PM View BBCode

I added a couple of links today, I put in links to player cards from the boxscore. And I made the draft year a link in the player card so you can view the draft results from that year.

Let me know what you think.

Great enhancements, now what about running totals in the boxscores for 2B, 3B, HR, SB and such a la MLB.

eg: HR - Smith (17), Jones (9) etc.

I like the links... all worked well.

The link to the draft is really cool. The player-card links in the box score are a real good idea and pretty useful, but am I the only one who feels that it makes the box score look awfully ... blue?

I'm guessing it's just a matter of needing to get used to the new look. But it is something of a shock, isn't it?

That will be tougher to do as I don't think I have this data available.

Yeah, I was thinking that too... which is why I asked for opinions on it. What do others think?

Too bad about the data not being available as it would add realism to the boxscores.

As for the colour - well it's more blue but less black I think it'll take a week and no one will notice.

If we don't have the data, it would cause the database to become huge and could possibly cause games to take much longer to run and pages longer to load. Just not worth the trouble.

Coming back to the aesthetic question, this is a web-based game, and we as a citizenry are becoming accustomed to more and more of the text we see being clickable. I think the improved function outweighs the issue of form. If there were an option to turn this on and off, I would choose to have it on.

(Can there be an option to turn this on and off? If so, you could hold that back as an option in case some people REALLY don't like the blue.)

Well the blue is from the link active link setting. It can be changed to other colors. Visited links can also be set to different colors based on the another setting.
I don't mind the blue and it looks good, just the underlining takes a little bit to get used. That can be also be adjusted based on settings.

I normally look up the other teams pitcher when they are unhittable just to see what their stats were. Now I can just click on them instead of looking up the team page for the other team.

I do stuff like that too, and I bet many folks do as well. So this is, overall, a Great Leap Forward.

I know that Tyson can change link colors, and I think I can change link colors, but I've never taken the time to learn about that stuff. Nobody wants to hear my opinion on what looks good, and I can't be bothered to futz with such things.

It'd be pretty easy to make the links gray or black using simple CSS.

Yeah, I thought about making it a different color.... problem with doing that is that people don't always know it is a link then....

I agree with you on that one, Tyson. Really, I think it's fine with the blue. Am I right that anyone who gets really exercised about it can change the colors for his own browser?

You know, I've only looked at one box score with the players' names as links, and already the box scores on the main site feel inadequate because the names aren't clickable. So, nice addition.

hmm, well they would still be underlined, and you could have a tooltip or something. Personally, I'd like all of the different visuals on the site to be able to be customized, but I guess until that day, the blue is fine.

Can we have that link take us to the player we should have drafted ?:D

Would it be possible to direct the pitcher links to their batting stats when they are listed as "batter" in the boxscore? Probably not worth the trouble, but if it's just a case of adding "&statsorimps=batting" to the link, it would be a nice touch (and not knowing the code, I have no idea if it's just that simple).

I like the links. Im all about the stats and the little nuiances, and I think its cool to be able to go back and see who was drafted before you star player, and compare their careers.

After reading everyone's reactions about the blue I was preparing myself for something of a shock... and then when I clicked through I wasn't shocked at all. I hardly notice it.

FYI - This is coming from someone who hasn't looked much at SD boxscores in a looooong time. So it could be similar to the view that a new player would have. (And of course, as seen by the reactions above, the SD regulars are likely to be shocked a bit.)

Finally, re: "I thought about making it a different color.... problem with doing that is that people don't always know it is a link then...." I think people will figure it out. Announce the change on the site news, most people who read the site will get it, and the rest will figure it out. It just makes sense that you can click on the name of a player to get to the player card. Ultimately, I don't think it has to be blue and underlined for people to figure it out.

The interesting thing that it does serve to do is to make the player's names stand out, which (to me) is aesthetically pleasing.
