If the White Sox Win...

September 29, 2008 at 05:10AM View BBCode

I'm lodging a protest with Major League Baseball. The Twins won 10 of the 18 games played between the two teams this season, it's ridiculous that the White Sox should get to host the one game playoff just because they won a coin flip before the season even started. This is an antiquated rule that has no place in modern sports, let the head to head determine home field, if they're still tied then use run differential or something, make it based on performance, not a coin toss at a meeting that was eight months ago.

And yes, I am making excuses now because home field advantage has determined the outcome of 15 of the 18 games between these teams this season.

I have to agree. Whatever advantage home field may bring, it ought to be determined by some kind of performance factor, rather than random chance. I mean, what's next? Determining home field advantage in the World Series by virtue of the outcome of the All Star Game?

Oh. Nevermind.

home team has a ~55% chance of winning given two similar quality teams.

and god, you are so spoiled. id love for my team to have a play in game to make the playoffs. homefield, away, whatever, ill take it.

you act like 10 of 18 is some sort of resounding edge.

not resounding, but still an edge. That tiebreaker should have meant something.

it is one game over .500. it is hardly decisive, it is a coin flip in itself.

if the coin flip had gone the other way, would the white sox complain? the two teams had the same record.

maybe the white sox would have said they had a better run differential, or a better ops, or a better era, or hit more home runs or doubles, or their players' wives were prettier.

(i have no idea how any of that stuff shelled out btw). but a 10-8 record is not any more impressive than any of that.

umm, it's a tiebreaker, so yes, it is important. If the Rays and Sox tied for the AL East, the Rays would get home field advantage because of their 10-8 record vs the Sox. Since they both made the playoffs, the head-to-head would only factor in seeding, but in the case of one team making it and one team not, that's why there's a play-in game...but the head-to-head results were never used...which is quite puzzling to me.

maybe they did it that way so the twinkies would have something to complain about. if they could play the game in that mickey mouse ball park and hit those choppers off the concrete, surely they could not lose.

They did it by coinflips because of scheduling concerns. They can't do it based on record because the game has to be played the day after the season ends and if the two competing teams play each other over the last weekend they simply can't do that. That wasn't the case here, but it's why it's done overall.

I've heard this before and don't buy the excuse. Games are scheduled a day in advance all the time. It's more than possible for the groundskeepers to keep the field in good shape in case a game needs to be played.

okay, what matt said there was the way bud presented it (that was the party line, at any rate).

i prefer to believe bud just hates the twinkies, i guess, and wanted the game in chicago. maybe he is trying to get the twins moving on that new stadium a little faster. because the one they play in is truly an abortion.

also, i guess that conspiracy theory i just advanced does presuppose a cheat on the coin flip too. isn't that just super-scandalous?

Someone cheated on a coin flip? Say it ain't so! What's next, players shooting themselves up with steroids?
