Not the worst selection by the VC of course but enough that I'll take back any defense I've been making of them of late.

Dick Allen was the only guy on their list who has a real case.

(I thought this was a joke thread when I clicked it.)

I'm afraid not.

He lost a decent amount of his career to the war and played in difficult parks to hit. You guys are underrating him.

(He's still not that good.)

Also, the war? Two years, Craig. He also enjoyed his best year in 1942, facing inferior competition because of the war.

No one's underrating him.

I'll underrate you! (he really was a better player than most of you are giving him credit for)

I will give Joe Gordon the full credit that he deserves for being a good second baseman -- even a very good one, considering that era and what was expected of middle infielders. He doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame, and Dick Allen (probably) does.

I didn't know Allen was a pet cause of yours. I love me some Dick Allen (I'm somewhat lukewarm about his HOF case, though).

Gordon was an okay choice. Not many people were really clamoring for him, but I doubt anyone will really be up-in-arms about him either. In context, I think his career is better than it looks at first glance, but it was also really short. There's enough really atrocious HOFers that he'll sort of disappear into the crowd, he certainly isn't a stand-out among that group.

He's not. But he put up very good (in some cases elite) numbers in a decade that was pretty rough on hitters, and his reputation as a bit of a jerk (or, if you'd prefer, as one of those lazy coloreds) probably cost him any consideration he may have deserved. His short career (and the bizarre circumstances surrounding his retirement) also cost him.

He's very borderline, which is what the Veteran's Committee is sort of all about, but I think he had the best case among the candidates.

The things that keep Allen out, from most important to least:

Uppity

Short career
Indifferent defender

My guess is, he'll get in eventually. His numbers really are awfully good, and a lot of the extracurricular stuff will be forgotten with time.

This is why, quite honestly, I'm surprised he's not a pet cause of yours. Come on, Craig, he's a brother.

Just like me.

I do like Dick Allen quite a bit, or at least I think he's really interesting. I just think there are better players who aren't in the Hall.

Ive never heard of him. and his name is too basic.

if you let a guy in who shouldnt be in the HOF, his name better at least be Rabbit Maranville or Phil Rizzuto. Not Joe censored or whatever this guys name was.

I would never have guessed. Do they not have video games of pre 1990 players?
