Dodgers knew Schmidt had shoulder problem

December 11, 2008 at 04:54PM View BBCode

"At the time the Dodgers entered into the policy with ACE," the suit reads, "both the Dodgers and ACE were aware that Mr. Schmidt had for some time during his career with the San Francisco Giants been suffering from a partial tear of the rotator cuff in his right [pitching] shoulder."

Schmidt pitched 213 innings in 2006, his final season in San Francisco, with a 3.59 earned-run average. However, according to STATS LLC, his percentage of fastballs below 90 mph that season jumped from below 10% in each of the first five months of the season to 24% in September.

"Before we sign anybody, they're run through a pretty strong physical," Dodgers General Manager Colletti said then. "If there was a red flag on any player, we wouldn't pursue him."

Uh, Ned, I'm going to go way out on a limb and suggest that a torn rotator cuff is a red flag. This sounds like grounds for immediate dismissal of Monsieur Colletti to me, not that it'll happen....

I do think there is a difference between a partially torn rotator cuff and a fully torn one that you're ignoring in this.

Well, sure there is, but that doesn't negate the utter stupidity of guaranteeing $48M to a guy with a tear (not torn) rotator cuff. Surely I'm biased in this, as I'm a Dodger fan, but it seems crazy to me to ignore a tear when negotiating a long-term deal. Then again, this is the same GM that navigated brilliant contracts for Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones, so....

The Jones deal looked at least ok when it was signed. sure it looks bad with hindsight, but who knew he would suck this bad?

I cant say the same for Pierre.

no it didn't. he'd just come off what were at the time career lows in avg, slg, runs, obp and an 8 year low in home runs. the fact that it looks even more awful now doesn't mean it didn't look awful at the time too.

"Major league pitchers often experience such partial rotator cuff tears but nevertheless remain competitive and effective," the suit reads, "as Mr. Schmidt had demonstrated himself to be during the 2006 season immediately prior to joining the Dodgers.

"The Dodgers therefore did not find Mr. Schmidt's preexisting rotator cuff condition to exclude him from consideration as a team member."

Guess that part of the story is not important.

Colletti is brilliant at bad deals.
