I'm still in shock...

I've been watching this guy through his career for years now. Last night's game really looked like he was finally ready for the big leagues...

So sad.

It is just ironic that he happened to pitch last night...and threw very well. What a terrible event.

(That's not irony. It's still sad.)

No question it is sad...how many pitchers die the day after they start and throw well? Irony.

(I don't want to get into a whole thing about it, because this thread should be about the dead kid, but trust me, that is not irony.)

It's a coincidence.

Regardless, blah.

This is horrible news. I've spent the last two weeks in and out of the U of M SICU visiting my sister-in-law who is 22. It's always hard to understand why things happen to people this young who should have their whole lives to look forward to.

I don't know about LA, but running red lights is an epidemic in this state.

If they do find that the scumbag who ran away after the accident was under the influence I hope they make an example out of him and he serves 2 manslaughter sentences.

Thank god he was caught a mile away.

New reports are saying this guy was drunk off his ass and is now facing 3 manslaughter charges (with a potential for one more since the 4th passenger is in critical condition), as well as hit and run charges.

I hope he rots in jail for the rest of his days.

I don't. I hope he can change his life and become a valuable member of society. I've never understood the punitive bent that says that in addition to those who tragically died that we should also destroy the life and whatever potential future there is of the guy who made a mistake. It was a horrible mistake and something he has to live with forever and there are times in my life when it could have been me but wasn't and so I feel sympathy and a little bit of empathy for the situation he finds himself in. Understand that I am not excusing the circumstances and there is a price that he will pay, I'm merely disagreeing with the opinion that it will be better to have him rot in jail for the rest of his life.

I'm sorry Bart, but there are no excuses for drunk driving. The "it could have been me but wasn't" is pretty lame.

edit: If it turns out he was not under the influence, then I completely agree with you.

I'm not excusing it. I'm saying that destroying someone else's life in response is also wrong for society

classy as always, eh?

a terrible, terrible tragedy. i actually hope they make the guy serve part of his sentence as a ride along to a first response team.

(also, not irony.)

Apparently the guy was driving on a suspended liscense too.

Still feel sympathy for this guy?
FuriousGiorge

I don't feel any sympathy, but I also don't think we need to crucify him. He should be punished according to the law, no more, no less.

"Cops believe Gallo was driving under the influence and on a suspended license because of a prior DUI. He fled the scene and was arrested. Gallo could be booked on murder charges, along with vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run and felony DUI."

All his family's wine money ought to buy him some fancy lawyers that can get him out of the charges. "Yo Ernest, I'm in trouble yo. Get me that lawyer that hooked you up when they found cyanide in the 1996 vintage."

(Suck on that, Eric.)

Look he was wrong, I think that everyone agrees on that. What purpose does it serve to have him "rot in jail for the rest of his life" Are we that vindictive as a society and if yes, is that a good thing. My contention is that it isn't and that we aren't.

I guess we'll see. Two (or maybe one?) more strikes and he's out in this state.

bastardo! You're like the new msse (/feels uncomfortable making a joke in this thread).

This is all very sad, obviously. On a general level, I agree with Bart, of course, as far as the preferred style of dealing with criminals. That being said, this guy censored up very badly, and I don't feel any sympathy for him on that front, or any sense that I could have done the same thing.

Apparently the hit and run was a literal hit and run - the guy bolted from the van and took off on foot. How loaded do you have to be to think that that's your wisest course of action?
