Orioles have been doing well enough thusfar (obviously I cant imagine the trend is going to continue)
but check this out for the SPs for the first 5 games:
Game 1 (Guthrie): RA - 3, IP - 6, Pitch count - 93
Game 2 (Uehara): RA - 1, IP - 5, Pitch count - 86
Game 3 (Simon): RA - 4, IP - 5, Pitch count - 89
Game 4 (Hendrickson): RA - 1, IP - 5.1, Pitch count - 91
Game 5 (Guthrie): RA- 0, IP- 6, Pitch count - 98
The pitchers are being taken out WAY too early. The RPs are going to have their arms thrown off.
The thing is, the orioles have terrible starting pitching, absolutely atrocious. And it will not be an uncommon occurrence for their SPs to get shelled and need to be taken out early. But when you supposed ace is throwing a shutout after 6 innings and his pitch count is at 98, you put him out there for the 7th.
If i remember correctly, the first ~120 pitches on a fully developed pitcher is absolutely no pitcher abuse, and going over a little bit isnt much abuse if you do it from time to time. Guthrie can throw another inning at 98 pitches, and save the relievers a bit of energy. Hell, in game 1 it was 6-3, you give him another inning in that game too. Simon is the only understandable one.

It is the first week. I think a lot of managers go light on their starters the first start or two to make sure they're fully in gear before they start going deeper. And the first week, the bullpen ought to be all rested, so you can get away with it--and hell, they probably all need a good dip in the regular season anyway.Now if this is going on three weeks from now, that'll be more interesting.

also: Brian Bass sucks. 5.1 IP, 5 HRs allowed. thats terrible. if he didnt let another homerun for the next 50 innings, his homerun rate would still be too high.

Oh god, how did I forget to mention this? I was at the opening day game. and they didnt play orioles magic. You know what they played? Obviously their problem is the pitching, and i guess their plan is to just bring a bunch of random no names with experience in, as if they were trying to win with the element of surprise. I dont know if there has been any sabermatic study on this, but i think the traditional logic is that when pitchers and hitters havent seen much of each other, the pitcher generally has the advantage. with a good defense behind them, the pitchers might be able to avoid getting totally destroyed at least.
If they were in any division other than AL East, there would be at least some minor glimmer of hope for this team, but with 3 extremely good teams in front of us, its hard to be too excited.

also: the team isnt bad. I honestly think they could turn the corner and become a good team in the near future. Their relief pitching is pretty good and pretty deep, their hitting is good and young, and they have an elite defense (i think i read somewhere that the orioles have the best defensive outfield in the majors. add in an elite defensive SS, a very good defensive 2Bman, and an above league average catcher in wieters... (what we need is 12 teams in the playoffs! and 4 divisions, like the NFL. although itd probably still be near impossible to make the playoffs. Rays would be put in the south division probably, so we would still be stuck with yankees/redsox)

"Orioles Magic" is extremely dated now. The lyrics are all about Earl Weaver and Memorial stadium and censored . But the song itself is a classic and an Orioles home win just isn't right without it. I think someone should start petitioning for an updated version.

Also, was poking through old threads last night: Tom was right about the Rays last spring, and Craig is correct that with the advent of the Nats, the O's are no longer a large market team.
I wouldn't call them "small market" though. I think the Balto-Wash market is going to be pretty complex. People may not drive the extra hour to watch an equally sucky team, but if one of the two ever starts getting really good I think you'll see interest gravitate toward it.

You dont see it in wyoming, but people just plain dont give a censored about the nationals. Their team sucks, their name sucks, their jerseys suck. Even casual fans dont want to root for the nationals because they dont want to wear those ugly ass jerseys.
I mean, people care more about hockey than the freaking nationals. At least if you go to a hockey game you can go to the spy museum before the game.

Orioles own a major stake in MASN. On top of being the signficantly more popular team, they actually get a significant profit from people watching nationals TV.I live in northern VA, I am metro accessable, and I will tell you that a very small percentage of people have switched to becoming nationals fans. You dont see it in wyoming, but people just plain dont give a censored about the nationals. Their team sucks, their name sucks, their jerseys suck.
