Expansion Draft Signup Logistics

May 29, 2009 at 04:56PM View BBCode

I'm working through the signup logistics and could use your input.

Let me work backwards.

In order to rank the players, we'll have to create a list of players to rank. This will be all the owners leaving the league.

I'd like to give the new owners as much time as possible to rank the players, but we don't want the situation where an owner changes his mind about renewing and then we have to recreate the list of players and throw the old list and rankings away.

So I think the list will be created once a league has 16 PAID owners plus listed Expansion teams (Expansion teams do not have to be claimed, just listed).

The problem then becomes what if a non-renewing owner makes a roster change after the list is created? Makes a trade, waives a player, etc. The list would need to be recreated.

So I am thinking about locking out the non-renewing owners at some point from making trades, waiving players, optioning players, and picking up players from the waiver wire. That way we can safely create a player list for the Expansion draft.

I need your feedback regarding when this should be done. At the earliest, I am thinking September 1st. The latest would be after the last game of the world series. In that case, the new owners don't have much time to draft so we might need to add in extra pause days at the end.

Any thoughts?

I would think that if you "froze" rosters for teams leaving after the last day of the regular seasons that would be adequate.

That way new owners have a minimum of two days "real time" to rank the players while the LCS and World Series take place.

I think I'm going to use the trade deadline. If you're finishing up the term and competing, then you have no need to acquire players after the trade deadline since you can't use them in the playoffs.

The code to create the list will look for the number of waiver wire days the league uses, add that to the trade deadline, and then populate the draftees sometime after that.

The draftee list creation code will also cancel any trade offers made by teams leaving the league.

I'm going to change the beta trade deadline to 8/15 so I can test some code I've been working on today.

What are you going to do with waiver wire players ?

Also what about guys are on rosters of teams for the expansion pool who retire before the expansion draft takes place ?

They will not be part of the Expansion draft.

They will be removed from the list after the offseason runs. Owners will have about 24 hours to adjust their prefs after the offseason runs, in the unlikely event this affects your rankings. Removing a few players from the list isn't a big deal in terms of strategy, but adding 40 in the event a team changes its mind on renewing would be a mess.

How about just freezing retirements for those teams? Players on the Expansion draft list simply do not go through the retirement check.

I'm not that concerned with retirements. I don't see that having a big impact (or any impact) on how one ranks the players.
