I thoroughly enjoyed the other one, so I thought I'd do it with a different slant.
Pick a team, any team (prolly your fav one) and tell us who your all time team would be.
Avoid HOFers, and guys who will be HOFers (I'll leave off Biggio, Bagwell, and Berkman) and guys who were hired guns for a season or two. Stick to guys who are easily identifiable as playing for your team, even if they moved on (like Cedeno for my Astros). tworoosters can help you you if you need to understand when you can and cannot use a player (see the PFHOF discussion).
Here's my all Astros team:
SP
Roy Oswalt (I don't think he'll rack up the stats needed for the HOF)
J.R. Richard
Mike Scott
Joe "Emory Board" Niekro
Don Wilson
RP
Dave Smith
Joe Sambito
Ken Forsch
Brad Lidge
C
Alan Ashby
Brad Ausmus
Tony Eusebio
1B
Bob Watson
2B
Billy Doran
3B
Ken Caminiti
SS
Dickie Thon (sad that the only guy who stands out at this position had one good season. They've had some gold glove types, like Metzger, but never a top flight SS.)
IF
Glenn Davis
Craig Reynolds
Doug Rader
LF
Jose Cruz
CF
Cesar Cedeno
RF
Jimmy Wynn
OF
Rusty Staub (he was more famous as an Expo, so he's not really on the team)
Terry Puhl
Denny Walling
Richard Hidalgo
(Hunter Pence and Carlos Lee may make the team eventually.)

Not to dump on this exercise, but.....why? How many Astros HOFers are there? 3? Why make an all-Astros team and leave off those guys?

March 05, 2010 at 03:39AM View BBCode
cuz everyone knows those guys.
and the guy who takes the Yankees would have 3 teams of HOF'ers rather than giving some love to roy white, etc.
plus, this is how I started the other thread, so I'll do the same here.
if you wanna do all time teams thread including HOF'ers, go head.

It just seems arbitrary. You have an all-time Astros team but no Biggio, no Bagwell, no Nolan Ryan. Imagine an outside observer looking at your team. What the hell is this guy doing? Has he never heard of this Craig Biggio fellow or something?

I gotta go with Giorge on this one, I appreciate what you're going for but to me it's foolish to have an Astros "Best of team" without Biggio or Bags.
It's a bit silly with some teams but if you make it the "best of that I've seen play" it probably works, even for the Yankees .
I'll try and find time to do a BlueJays team, don't really have to worry about the long time Jays in the HOF so it's a bit easier but I will use Alomar .

I'll do the Cubs, honestly it?s pretty tough when you can?t allow HOFers, must be easy to make those Astos depth charts.

Maybe this is an attempt to keep Yankees fans from contributing, since all Yankees make the HOF eventually.

Good list Dirt, you beat me to it.
I'm going to axe McGriff, not because he wasn't great but because I just don't identify him with Toronto (he pretty much played 5 years everywhere) and I need a way to get Otto Velez on the team.
So I'm moving Olerud to 1B and using Otto as my DH .
I also hated Kelly Gruber so I'm waiving him and going with the two headed 3B combo of Rance Mullinicks/Garth Iorg just for comedy. For roster integrity they only count as one player.
I'm also dropping Downs, who I assume you had as a situational LHP, and go with an all right handed bullpen by adding Billy Koch .
I tried hard to find a spot for Willie Upshaw but Otto beat him out at DH and I also wanted to have Shannon Stewart there, maybe drop Garcia and have Fredo back up at SS and 2B .

Not as special as you though tm .
Also can you please do something to ensure that those three turd pitchers don't get into the GNL Hall of Fame ?
I'm getting worried that the general apathy level may allow them to be enshrined and take some of the luster away from Roxy .

this is a
special year for that fake HOF.
(i would have boycotted the voting altogether had i known Moseby wouldn't make it.)

Oh, leave them alone, this is a fun exercise. I'd do the O's but I only really know a couple of decades worth of players, so my team would be heavy on the Mark McLemores and the Ben McDonalds and no one wants that.
