Green light to steal for certain runners

June 04, 2011 at 02:18AM View BBCode

Mostly, I think stealing is too risky to be worthwhile, except in a few circumstances, even for A+ runners. However, a guy who's maxed out on speed has good enough odds that I would like to give him the green light. I can't do that now without giving it to all my A+ speed guys.

Stealing for A+ runners is risky in SimD only because all the catchers have A+ arms. In real life A+ runners should run, run, & run!

That being said, I agree that we should have steal prefs for each player.

with the right personell and the right settings, 75% is doable, even against all the strong arms, with sucessful steals in the 200 plus or minus range. most folks think that is acceptable.

(it is acceptable.)

75% is certainly attainable, quite easily actually, but rarely with 200 steals. I find most SIM teams that attain the 75% rate tend to make 150 or less attempts

Willy's point about catcher's arms has some validity but since speed continues to improve until they are 27-28 the catchers need to keep going as well . Realistically I think speed/arm/range should all have a maximum level of improvement say 30 points .

I like the catchers in the sim. They're a throwback to a time when catchers could actually throw out runners. It's a lost art in the MLB. That said as one who likes a lot of speed and likes to run. I think the balance is pretty good.

Actually the balance is not good. The elite runners do not perform up to MLB standards, and because there are too many good (A and A-) base stealers in SimD, they balance all that speed by giving catchers too good of a chance to reach A+ arm.

who led real life MLB last season (in steals) and what was the sucessful percentage?

who led real life MLB last season in sucessful percentage on attempts above, say, whatever number you want to pick out as enough attempts to be considered the crazy good running awesome?

report back.

Well 2 seasons ago Carl Crawford was 60 out of 76 and Jacoby Ellsbury was 70 for 82. Jose Reyes has had some nice years too: [url=http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/reyesjo01.shtml]Jose Reyes[/url]

These don't happen in SimD very often or at all in SimD.

i will find some sims for you later. until the simulations can handle making the runners steal on the pitcher though, you aren't going to get much out of it. they don't steal that stuff on the catcher, they steal most of them on the pitcher. the catcher never has a chance.

This guys was one of the fastest guys I've had in SimD. He was very close to max speed, probably 97/98.

[url=http://www.topindustrynews.com/player.jsp?id=5784398]Eric Moreno[/url]

He had some very good years but still had too many 20+ CS years for an elite baserunner. It's tough to get those 83+% SB years while still getting 50+ for a season total.

your real life guys don't have many either do they?

http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=8251400

what is 52 and 17? i am too lazy.

(this was from bobby's team last year. the whole thing stole 183 and was caught 62).

That's 69, so 52-for-69 is .754 pct. which is solid and all, but not what the elite guys do in most years.

75% is fairly easy to do in SimD but getting into the mid 80 percent range isn't.

how many seasons can you find of real life stolen bases with sucessful attempts over 50 and at an over 80% rate? how many have there been?

(i have no idea how easy or difficult this is to find. i don't think there have been a whole lot of them. in general, the ones who love to steal seem to love to get caught too really. how about the greatest of all time? ricky? how many does he have, over 50 stolen, at over 80%? i know ricky is also the all time leader in caught stealing and all.)

(by mid 80 percent range do you mean 85%? you might come up with some real life players that did that in scattered seasons. anybody that has done it much? again, i do not know. i do not count crawford and ellsbury doing it once each, or reyes coming close a few times.)
tm4559

((i don't really want to do the arithmetic i reckon, but i suppose rickey did it a a bunch of times. that is pretty mind boggling.)
tm4559

June 09, 2011 at 07:09PM View BBCode

at any rate, i did rickey's 14 qualifying seasons (over 50 sucesses, although he had some awesome percentage years on slightly lower numbers too) and i got this (percentage rounded to two places and number of times at that percentage)

72 once
76 twice
79 twice
83 once
84 once
85 twice
86 NEVER!!!!!!
87 twice
88 once
89 once
90 once

it is quite spectacular. is there more than one rickey in real life?

(if we somehow had it to go that high for some thing in simulation, it would go that high for, perhaps, too many compared to real life.)

now, incredibly enough, the very first one on the list when i looked up the single season highs for sb brought forward this code bit

http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=7123365

with 8 qualifying seasons. the percentages were

79, 77, 81, 87, 84, 80, 73, 80
tm4559

June 09, 2011 at 07:27PM View BBCode

we even had a simulated rickey with eight qualifiers!

77, 76, 82, 81, 81, 88, 83, 84

Actually there are more 85+, quite a few more, and some players have career numbers of 83 and 84%!

All of these guys had these success rates in seasons of 50+ steals:

Vince Coleman - 81, 88, 83, 75, 87, 82, 86
Tim Raines - 87, 83, 87, 88, 87, 87, 91
Willie Wilson - 87, 89, 88, 84
Davey Lopes - 77, 87, 86
Joe Morgan - 77, 82, 83, 87, 87

they don't look very far off the cards i posted.

(the cards i posted were for eight seasons. i see two sevens there, one five, one four, one three. it is what i mean by "scattered." you see what i am getting at, right? you make it so the simulated ones can do it, they reel it off 13, 14 seasons in a row. a veritable host of rickeys.)

Reduce speed a bunch and reduce catcher arms a little and you could see numbers like that more often. We will always have the steals cause people like them, but you'll see the CS% go down vs the real base-stealers. I mean teams with 200 steals shouldn't happen 4 times a season in every league.
