Leadership Bonus Change Idea

July 18, 2011 at 05:36PM View BBCode

I know there have been one or two threads in the past about the leadership bonus in salary leagues and my intention is not to go through everything that has been discussed before, but I had an idea.

What if the leadership bonus worked for the team that the player had spent the most time with instead of the last team they played for?

Even though it doesn't bother me when a team trades for a player late in a season just to get the leadership bonus, I think I have read a few people might not care for it.

The situation that started me thinking about this was in the CHL. I was in a pennant race and tried to trade for an OS28 pitcher. He had his birthday while we were in negotiations and he got an A+ (I think, it was high at least) leadership and ruined the trade. I realize I probably could have tried to work a trade for him with a trade back at the end of the season, but I didn't care what his leadership was, I wanted him to help me get into the playoffs.

I am not emotionally tied to changing it, and am not even saying it needs changed. Just wondered if there was any support for this idea.

I think that if there is an easy way to code it, it makes a lot more sense for a guy to have a hometown tie-in to the team he played for the most rather than the team he played for most recently.

See my own feeling is that there ought to be some for every team he's been a part of. Often you'll hear a player being away for a decade and coming back home to finish off the career. (think Eddie Murray going back to BAL (although he stayed an extra year after that) or Dennis Eckersley going back to BOS)

I think you still have to give some sort of bonus to the team he ended with. If we are trying to look at realistically (and maybe we aren't, I don't know), that player will often times have relocated and be living in his new cities (not always, but often times). Part of the benefit of staying with the same team is not having to relocate.

I think my proposal would be give a 25% leadership bonus for 1 year with a team, 50% bonus for 2 years, 75% bonus for 3+ years and then an additional 25% bonus for the last team the player was with.

So lets say Player A was drafted by Team X and played there until he was a free agent, then played with Team Y for 1 year and then team Z for 3 years and is now a free agent. Team X would get 75% of his leadership bonus, Team Y would get 25%, and Team Z would get the full leadership bonus.

If that was the case though I would recommend bumping up some of the leadership bonuses. Keep A+ at 29%, but instead of dropping by increments of 4-5%, maybe drop by 3-4% instead and give C and C+ leaders small bonuses too.

I'm brand new to salary, but right now I think the leadership bonus should be entirely with the current team. I think if a team trades a guy away, they shouldn't retain any sway over his emotions. If anything, he should probably be less likely to sign with a team that shipped him away.

But I also like the idea of a little hometown bonus like the NBA has, where the current team can offer more money. This isn't the same, but sort of similar end result, where the current team gets a little bit of a boost that nobody else can match.
